I received this message from Nunu’s amazing OT when I shared a little snippet of her Kindergarten orientation day and her participating in ‘sport’.

Sometimes I forget just how much has gone into getting us to this point. Countless therapy sessions spanning nearly 6 years, an amazing network of therapists, our gorgeous nanny/support person and her siblings who are always cheering her on.

She is going to amazing things I can just tell. I’m so proud of how far she has come. 🫶🏼

✍️ Does pencil grip really matter? ✏️

The tripod grasp is considered the most effective grip for handwriting. There is more to this than neat handwriting!

Holding a pen or pencil with the recommended grasp increases stability, reduces fatigue and prevents pain in the wrists and finger joints. This is so important when students are writing for extended periods in class and test conditions.

Tripod grasp usually develops around 5-6 years of age. Before this, little hands are still developing. If your child isn’t naturally moving towards tripod grasp after their first year of school, there are some simple things you can do to encourage an effective pencil grip.

📝 Try these easy strategies from paediatric occupational therapist @nicole_otlife from @sydneykidsot.

If you’ve been dreading the return to chaos in the morning, then this little parenting nugget might be the tip that changes everything. I know for me, it certainly did!

Simply being prepared ahead of the morning and allowing more time for kids to at least try to do things themselves, will give them the independence they need.

Less battling and more cheerleading, I say!

These expert chats have been so great in the lead up to the back to school period. Thanks to our friends at @shoesandsoxau for giving our kids the best (and comfiest) start to the new school year!

Play dough activities are so beneficial for children’s fine motor development! All that squishing, rolling, poking and pulling helps to build the strength and coordination needed to hold a pencil, use scissors, open containers, button and zip clothes and tie laces.

Paediatric occupational therapist @nicole_otlife from @sydneykidsot, shares a simple play dough routine to practice bilateral coordination, in-hand manipulation, pincer grasp and hand strength.
