Four years later, the numbers are in.

Windsor House is a Passive House renovation in Windsor Terrace, Brooklyn. Designed to dramatically reduce energy use, its rooftop solar array generated 90.6% of the home’s annual electricity, bringing it close to net zero.

Four years after completion, we returned to the data to measure how the house is actually performing in use—not just how it was predicted to perform.

For us, high-performance design shouldn’t stop with an energy model or certification. We want to understand how our homes perform over time—and use what we learn to make the next one better.

Visit our website to learn more about Windsor House and our approach to high-performance homes.

Join us online NEXT TUESDAY, Sept. 22nd at Noon CT for AIA/PHI CEs and a presentation all the way from France: Martin Paquot (topophile) will present:

"From Straw Houses to Straw Buildings: Lessons from France"
France’s century-old straw-building tradition—and its relevance to American Passive House practitioners—is anything but new. Drawing on examples documented by Topophile, Martin will examine straw’s thermal performance, low-carbon potential, agricultural origins, and integration with wood and other natural materials. He will also explore how France’s building regulations and professional rules recognize and enable straw construction. Connecting this experience with today’s high-performance construction goals, the talk offers practical inspiration for healthier, lower-carbon, climate-resilient buildings using local materials affordably. #naturalbuildingmaterials #passivehouse #highperformancebuilding #strawbaleconstruction #lowcarbonbuilding @passivehouse_international @the_phnetwork Meeting link in bio.

New York has 233,000 rowhouses. Mostly pre-1930, highly inefficient, and - importantly - variations of essentially the same building type.

That repetition makes the rowhouse one of the city’s greatest opportunities for scalable retrofit, yet it remains largely overlooked. The barrier isn’t the technology. We’ve had it for fifteen years. Only 59 deep-energy rowhouse retrofits exist citywide: roughly one in four thousand.

The barrier is how we deliver the work.

That’s the case our principal Themis Haralabides and bldgtyp’s John Mitchell are making this Friday at Regenerative Metropolis ‘26, the @nypassivehouse symposium at @parsons_thenewschool.

“The Rowhouse as a Replicability Engine: How Integrated Design-Build Can Unlock NYC’s Most Overlooked Decarbonization Opportunity.”

September 18, 9am–7pm. University Center, 63 Fifth Avenue.

Last month we had the pleasure of hosting @the_phnetwork's 2026 national conference. For two days, architects, builders, and policymakers working to change the built environment gathered here for sessions, building tours, and good conversation. We're proud to serve as a living laboratory for Passive House design, and even prouder of what it stands for: buildings that tread lightly on the planet while feeling better to be inside. Quieter rooms, fresher air, steadier comfort. If you've stayed with us, you've felt it. Thank you to everyone who made the weekend what it was. Swipe through for a look back.

These past few days, much of the Northeast has been under both a Heat Wave Alert and an Air Quality Alert, as wildfire smoke from Canada reduces air quality across New York, New Jersey, Boston, and beyond.

Today, the Air Quality Index here reached over 200, with PM₂.₅ as the primary pollutant, particles so small they can travel deep into your lungs and even enter your bloodstream.

When it’s over 90 degrees outside and the air itself isn’t healthy, opening a window for fresh air isn’t really an option.

But here’s the question most people never think about: if your windows are closed... where is your indoor air actually coming from?

High-performance Passive House buildings are different. They control where fresh air comes from, using airtight construction and filtered mechanical ventilation instead of relying on accidental leaks.

Because building science isn’t just about energy anymore, it’s about resilience, healthier indoor air, and protecting the spaces where we spend about 90% of our lives.

On June 23rd at Noon CT, we meet again! Network and earn AIA/PHI CEs:

"Bio- and Mineral-Based Enclosures for Cold-Climates"
with Lindsey Love (Regenerative Building Solutions) and Lisa Morey (Nova Terra)

Passive House performance in cold climates can be achieved with readily available natural and bio-based materials when assemblies are properly detailed and aligned with hygrothermal requirements.

Cellulose, wood fiber, hemp, straw, and earthen systems are increasingly used within high-performance envelopes.

Lisa and Lindsey will share strategies for measurable high performance:
→ airtightness + superinsulation as primary performance drivers
→ thermal mass as a tuning layer (not a substitute for R-value)
→ bio- and mineral-based insulation... with mineral-based thermal mass.

Plus: natural, air-tight, vapor-open assemblies that can be designed for:
→ dew point control
→ inward and outward drying potential, and
→ moisture storage capacity in cold climates.

All are welcome.
Please SHARE ☀️ ☀️☀️
