At the Good Vibrations workshop, we explored how loving ourselves also means understanding our bodies, embracing our pleasure, knowing our rights, and having the confidence to advocate for ourselves.

But we must also acknowledge that culture, social norms, and gender expectations do not give everyone the same freedom to claim this agency. Some people are taught to silence their needs, feel shame about their bodies, or place everyone else’s needs before their own.

Creating space for conversations about pleasure is therefore more than personal empowerment. It is about challenging the norms that limit bodily autonomy, ensuring that all genders have the knowledge, freedom, and confidence to make decisions about their bodies and pleasure without shame or discrimination.

Because Loving Yourself is not just about knowing your worth; it is about having the agency to honour it.

Every girl deserves the opportunity to learn, grow, feel safe, and shape her future!
On this International Day of the Girl Child, HOVUC joins the call to end child marriage and to invest in girls’ rights. We must protect girls from harmful practices, uphold their bodily autonomy, ensure access to quality education and health care, and create spaces where their voices are heard and their choices respected.
Because when we invest in girls, we invest in stronger communities and a more equitable future for all.

This week, on 30th September and 1st October 2026, HOVUC, in partnership with @amplifychange , engaged students at St John Olik and Ombeyi Secondary Schools in a general Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) session, building on peer learning established through the CSE Clubs.
Following the training of 40 students in each school as CSE Champions through weekly sessions over one month, the trained students continue to share pleasure-inclusive, evidence-based SRH information with their peers. This peer-led approach is one of HOVUC’s strategies for strengthening SRH knowledge and contributing to the prevention of teenage pregnancies.
The sessions focused on consent, personal boundaries and informed decision-making, encouraging students to understand their right to make decisions about their bodies, recognise and communicate boundaries, respect those of others, and seek appropriate guidance and support when needed.
At St John Olik, 232 students participated- 111 girls and 121 boys, while 482 students participated at Ombeyi, comprising 267 girls and 215 boys. HOVUC also distributed dignity kits, with girls receiving a pant and sanitary towels and boys receiving a boxer.
The sessions created safe spaces for students to raise issues affecting them, including masturbation, drug and substance abuse, and mental and emotional wellbeing. We call on partners and stakeholders to collaborate with HOVUC in strengthening information, guidance and support for young people in schools and communities to make healthy and informed decisions and protect their futures.

HOVUC co-convened the Kisumu County AYP Technical Working Group meeting, bringing together CSOs, County Government departments, including Health and Children’s Services, the County Commissioner’s Office and other stakeholders. The meeting provided a platform to review progress, share interventions and address emerging issues affecting adolescents’ and young people’s SRHR, health and wellbeing across Kisumu County.

The meeting highlighted the triple threat of teenage pregnancy, HIV and GBV as major and persistent SRHR concerns in Kisumu County, alongside gaps in SRH commodities and AYP programming. However, teenage pregnancy data showed a positive trend in Miwani and Ombeyi Wards in Muhoroni Sub-County, where HOVUC operates, with reported cases declining from 13 to 7 in Miwani and 42 to 23 in Ombeyi between Q1 and Q2 2026. This progress aligns with HOVUC’s pleasure-based SRHR approach, CSE Clubs in schools, youth clinic days during holidays, the Ramula youth-friendly clinic, intergenerational dialogue and digital advocacy.

The County Health Department commended HOVUC for its continued advocacy for the Kisumu County Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare Bill. The Public Participation Report is now ready, paving the way for the Bill to proceed to the County Assembly for second reading, with stakeholders anticipating its enactment by the end of 2026.

Stakeholders also emphasized the need for stronger coordination between the Department of Health and the Children’s Department, particularly through data sharing, referrals and follow-up, to better link teenage pregnancy data with cases of sexual violence against children and strengthen coordinated adolescent SRH and protection responses.

Last week, in partnership with @amplifychange we held our last CSE Club learning sessions at Ombeyi and Olik Oliero Secondary Schools with a deeper conversation on menstrual health and the role of boys in ending period stigma.
Club members explored the menstrual cycle, common menstrual experiences, self-care and hygiene, menstrual products, myths and misconceptions, and when menstrual concerns may require healthcare.
The conversation also highlighted the important role boys can play by understanding menstruation, respecting privacy and dignity, challenging teasing and shame, and creating supportive spaces where menstruation can be discussed openly.
Because menstrual health is a shared responsibility and ending period shame requires everyone to play a part.❤️

No Barriers, Just Choices: Contraceptive Access Now.
HOVUC, in partnership with @amplifychange and the Muhoroni Sub-County Department of Health, joined community members at Ramula Health Centre to commemorate World Contraception Day 2026.
People of reproductive age accessed health education and family planning services, with 56 family planning services provided, alongside 61 cervical cancer screenings and 61 breast examinations.
The conversation continued on Radio Victoria, a local radio station, where we engaged listeners on contraceptive methods, myths and misconceptions, culture and religion, the role of men, and young people’s access to contraceptive services in Kisumu.
The day highlighted that contraceptive access is more than providing services—it is also about accurate information, open conversations and the freedom to make informed choices. We encouraged parents and children to have honest, age-appropriate conversations about sexual and reproductive health, because informed choices begin with informed conversations.

SRHR Linking with Pleasure Session for Deaf Youths 2026

We, Y-PEER Nepal incollaboration with Disabilities 2030, Y-PEER Asia Pacific (Y-PEER AP), and the Pleasure Fellowship 2026, successfully conducted the SRHR Linking with Pleasure Session for Deaf Youths 2026 on 18–19 September 2026. The session was conducted online on 18 September, followed by an in-person session on 19 September. The two-day initiative provided a safe, inclusive, and accessible platform for Deaf young people to engage in meaningful discussions on sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), pleasure, consent, personal boundaries, communication, relationships, self-care, and bodily autonomy.

The sessions emphasized the importance of ensuring that Deaf youths have access to accurate, comprehensive, and accessible SRHR information. Through interactive discussions, reflection, experience-sharing, and participatory learning, participants explored the relationship between pleasure and SRHR while challenging common myths, stigma, and misconceptions. The sessions also highlighted the importance of creating supportive environments where young people can ask questions, express their perspectives, and develop greater confidence in communicating about their rights, choices, and boundaries.

We extend its appreciation to Disabilities 2030, Y-PEER AP, and the Pleasure Fellowship 2026, along with all facilitators, interpreters, participants, and individuals who contributed to making the sessions meaningful and inclusive. Such initiatives contribute toward strengthening accessible, youth-friendly, and inclusive SRHR education, ensuring that Deaf young people are meaningfully included in conversations and initiatives related to their health, rights, and well-being.

This week, HOVUC, in partnership with @amplifychange , continued the CSE Club learning sessions at Ombeyi and Olik Oliero Secondary Schools, focusing on urinary tract infections (UTIs) and vaginal, vulval, and penile health and hygiene.
Club members explored what UTIs are, common signs such as pain or burning when urinating, frequent urination and lower abdominal discomfort, and factors that can increase the risk of infection. They also discussed practical ways of supporting urinary and reproductive health, including maintaining good personal hygiene, drinking enough water, avoiding holding urine for long periods, and seeking appropriate healthcare when symptoms occur.
The session further addressed vaginal, vulval and penile hygiene, including appropriate cleaning practices, understanding normal vaginal discharge, avoiding practices such as douching, and recognising symptoms such as unusual discharge, persistent itching, sores, pain or swelling that may require medical attention.
By building practical knowledge around recognizing symptoms, preventing avoidable risks, and seeking care early, the sessions continue to strengthen CSE Club members as informed peer champions who can share accurate health information and support their peers to access appropriate services.

For every $1 spent on sex education, when information on pleasure is incorporated into the education programme it sees a return of $23.

‘Pleasure based or pleasure inclusive SRHR’ refers to sexual and reproductive health and rights programming that addresses pleasure, satisfaction, consent and agency alongside - not instead of - risk reduction and disease prevention.

It’s not about spending tax payers money abroad as you will have seen from the answers I received from the Secretary of State where they clearly state they “…have not yet engaged with WHO on the topic of pleasure based sexual and reproductive health as published by the British Medical Journal”.

I know you appear to be a fan of twisting truths but I suspect you’d hate to feel a little silly and get this one so wrong.

As you know, The BMJ is an esteemed and well respected publication.
