My friend @elizabeth_ai also RHS alum, is working on this project and looking for people to submit Videos or Photos of people that lived though this subculture. Please DM her what you got, especially home videos!!!! I credit my mom for allowing me to express myself at this time and wearing pointy leather shoes to 5th grade and playing kickball. Also, my sisters love of Synth Pop. Hainy, my new friend from Rosemead brought me into his family and introduced me to this.

So happy that NEW WAVE reconnected me to hometown hero and fashion icon Humberto Leon, co-founder of @openingceremony.

Here's a first of more posts to come from @humberto about his new wave days:
The year was 1985, I had just moved from Highland Park to Rosemead and met a friend who quickly became my best friend. His name was Hainy and his parents were super cool. I just remember they had a mini fridge in their bedroom with Sara Lee chocolate cake in it. I started hanging out with his family and went to his family's garage dance parties. They played a lot of New Wave music and I was hooked. I copied cassette tapes of Modern Talking, C.C. Catch, Joy, etc. and introduced it to my sisters. They were already into Depeche Mode, Pet Shop Boys, Erasure, New Order, etc. so "Asian New Wave" (aka Eurodisco) and Synth POP all fit together perfectly!

I think the inherent style was one thing that really struck me. Along with the music, came the way this community dressed and it was very groundbreaking. It was a rebellion of style and it felt very unique. I still think a lot about everything I loved back then and it still informs my style today. I wore pointy toe shoes to school in 5th grade. That’s a big statement considering I even played kick-ball in those shoes.

1. Fresh back from a Hong Kong shopping trip with his mom, Humberto shows off his new wave gear from skinny tie, shiny vest, to pointy shoes (yes, the ones he played kick-ball in).

2. Humberto with Hainy, 5th grade BFFs at Hainy's birthday party. Both super stylish in their new wave threads.

3. Humberto and Hainy at the party. Humberto's hand in a cast - he broke it while playing tether ball, of course
