Where are we? ||
*
It’s really interesting how common it is to hear people speak about finding themselves. As human beings, we are the only species that posses our unique combination of consciousness, self awareness, and physical adaptability. We began as nomadic tribes, and worked our way through meeting our needs with migration, exploration, and community. Our ancestors were not likely trying to “find themselves” as they crossed the vastness of Pangea. It’s highly unlikely that any frontiersmen were struggling with an identity crisis as they climbed the Rockies in search of a better life. *
So why is it that all these years later, when we are more “connected” than ever, do we all seem to have to put so much energy into feeling lost in hopes of finding ourselves? *
Not my place to decide. But if I had to take a guess, I’d say it’s born of Internal conflict between who we are, who we want to be, and the comparison against where with think we should be. Our culture currently idolizes the nomad, the “van lifer”, anyone who seems to have the balls to take ownership and agency of their life. We treat it like it’s a mythical dream, akin to playing pro-sports, or making it big as a musician. 200 years ago, living out of a wagon wasn’t exactly something to write home about. It was a means to an end. It was the actionable piece to an idea, that was put into motion with intention.
*
So where are we? I’m pretty confident we are right where we need to be. And you know what? That’s a lot harder than being lost, isn’t it? Because it’s easy to pass the time “finding ourselves”. To feel like we are doing when we say we are “working on getting the next thing ready.” It makes us temporarily feel like progress. But it’s not.
*
If you think you’re a little lost, and you fall asleep at night knowing your dreams might feel a bit better than your reality, here’s my take: Pack your wagon. Take the ownership of your day, even though it’s hard. Stop listening to the comparative voice in your head that tells you that you’re missing something.
*
You have everything you need inside you, and you are exactly where you need to be.
