Exploring the Yucatán. Ancient cities, sandy beaches, quiet ruins holding more history than you can fully take in. Flamingos in the wild (somehow even more surreal than expected), and that particular light that makes everything feel slightly cinematic.

The days blurred in the best way—salt air, long lunches, later dinners, and the kind of conversations that only happen when everyone is a little removed from real life. Grateful for the places, but mostly for the friends.

At @haciendasubin the corrida announces the end of the cool winter and the beginning of the dry hot summer. Rains will come soon after this but not before so much change.
We were lucky to be here to experience this paradise in the Yucatan, and all the gifts that life gave us last season. Love. Gratitude. Friendship. So many gifts here in the place we call home.

A recent feature on @haciendasubin in @yucatan.magazine captures the spirit of the place, and what is yet to come, so beautifully through the writing of @the_real_dnm. I’m happy to share a short excerpt from the story here.

“Like many homes in Mérida, all you see at first is a wall of weather-patinated stone. But step inside and Hacienda Subin slowly reveals itself, low and wide, unfolding just as it was meant to be seen.

Built in the 1680s as a cattle ranch, the property sat in ruins for decades before beginning a long and thoughtful restoration. Over time, its spaces were brought back to life with care and patience, honoring the spirit of the land while allowing new stories to take root.

What has grown here over the years is more than a home. It is a place shaped by friendship, creativity, and community.

Occasionally, a house waits for the right moment to become what it was always meant to be.”

This February, the Studio of Laura Kirar hosted something uniquely ours: a thoughtfully curated art & culture tour in the Yucatan.

This year's Post-MACO Tour (tm) began with a quiet unfolding of the peninsula’s history, tracing the layered narratives that shape this land, from its ancient cosmology to its colonial architecture and enduring craft traditions. Context is everything. To understand vernacular contemporary art and culture, we first grounded ourselves in place.

From there, we moved through artists’ studios and galleries, where we were welcomed into their creative worlds to witness not only finished pieces but also the processes, materials, and ideas behind them. Layered worktables. Canvases in progress. Sketches pinned to walls. Witnessing firsthand the artists' spark of inspiration and what exists before resolution.

As with all our tours, the experience was defined and deepened by the people who joined us. The conversations shared across tables and studios, the exchange of ideas, the quiet moments of discovery, and a collective immersion in Merida's culture, cuisine, and creative community came together.

Our 2026 Post-MACO Tour (tm) week was a reminder of the great benefit of slowing down and looking closely.

From ruins to resplendent, the last 14 years restoring Hacienda Subin has been a labor of love, a pursuit with deep respect for the culture and history of this centuries-old building as well as all the ancient structures here before it. A life’s mission of gently sculpting the jungle landscape and earth tumbled limestones ~ piedra para piedra ~ Subin was patiently reconstructed. Her elevated foundation and surrounding jungle gardens resonate a magical energy that is felt most directly in one’s mind & heart. Every experience at Hacienda Subin is a sensory memory in the making.
