Under the Same Sky, A New Anti-Racism Campaign by Centrala This Refugee Week, Centrala is proud to launch Under the Same Sky, a new anti-racism campaign born from urgency, shaped by solidarity, and driven by hope. Developed in response to the 2024 racist riots and the lasting trauma they caused among Birmingham’s migrant and refugee communities, this campaign stands as a call for unity, healing, and systemic change. While Birmingham is one of the UK’s most diverse cities, diversity doesn’t always mean connection. Research and lived experience reveal ongoing divisions and limited integration between migrant, refugee, and long-settled communities, including within migrant groups themselves. Under the Same Sky responds directly to this, working to bridge those gaps with empathy, creativity, and collective action. At its heart, this campaign uplifts migrant voices. We especially want to challenge harmful stereotypes and support Central and Eastern European communities in showing their commitment to inclusion and anti-racism. We are not bystanders, we are allies, neighbours, and changemakers. From a vibrant Summer Solstice Gig, to an anti-racism concert in the autumn, this campaign will use art, culture, and community as tools for transformation. Activities will run through to the end of November, and everyone is invited. Because no matter where we come from, we all live under the same sky. Keep an eye out to see how you can get involved! Join us. CEE us!. Build with us. Once more (01/05) at @centrala_space for one of their more underground/experimental gigs. @opiumlorddoom Doom metal with growls and slow riffs but not as slow as some. In fact despite their self description I'd question whether this really counts as doom??? It's very death metal adjacent if so. Aggressive. Interesting bit with slow singing that was definitely not death metal adjacent. @the_retinal_circus Not sure which genre they would fit in. Psychedelic noise rock? At their best when instrumental. Oddly danceable. Some songs reminded me a bit of Gogol Bordello without the out `folk' instruments, but some others sounded quite different. Extremely awesome, probably my favourite act of the night. @dearthworms There were two guitar, a bass, and a piano/synth. Kinda noisy as well. According to them a touch of post-punk although frankly I'm more reminded of old school punk (Stiff Little Fingers, Sex Pistols, Ramones). Bit screamy. There was one song where the bassist sang that was the best in their set IMO. @pohlrules Definitely noise rock. Or "garage psych noise rock heavy metal" according to them. Actually think it was kind of post rocky, except with vocals (which I know aren't necessarily verbotten in post-rock, but they're less common. Second time I'm saying this recently but a bit of overuse of sampled audio. Wasn't a fan of that, but they were good otherwise and the more post-rocky, somber vibe worked to cap off the night.

So yesterday I was back at @centrala_space space for a very unusual gig. I will break my convention and write first about the headliner Howie Reeve (@borkisdad ) because listening to him was a very emotional experience. I had never heard accoustic bass guitar being played live, let alone as a solo instrument (except for two songs with @codofrock 's banjo). In the very intimate setting (he eschewed the stage as you can see) and with his earnest and heartfelt lyrics it was, as I've said, something very intense. He asked us not to take any pictures or videos after the first couple sounds and I respected that and honestly even though my ADHD brain struggled at times it may have been for the better because it was truly something I felt privileged to experience. We even got a sticker! I'm not sure if they would agree with my description, but before Howie @the_retinal_circus delivered some mathy noise rock which I loved. Reminded me of Battles at bits. Very very enjoyable and a good palate cleanser between Howie and Cod. Kinda made me want to dance a bit. Cod O'Donnel (@codofrock ) opened with some participation from Howie and delivered a very unique experience. I had never before had a musician leave the stage and bid us to follow him to the back of the venue to play an upright piano they had there. He was truly skilled with the banjo though, an instrument I felt I haven't really appreciated properly in the past. Once again it's amazing seeing these experimental performers grace Birmingham and we have to thank (and use!) the venues like @centrala_space that make this possible!
