Stone Dreams (2021)
Joseph Bohigian, sound
Gabriel Atjian, video

How is memory preserved when physical sites of memory are destroyed? When collective memory is separated from a place, how can it be revived in a new context? Among the khachkars of Noratus cemetery, a stone becomes an instrument that brings forth fragments of Armenian folk songs, an act of remembering in the face of a century of imposed forgetting.

Joseph Bohigian is a composer and performer of acoustic and electronic music. His work focuses on issues of memory, cultural reunification, and diaspora. His music has been performed at the International Computer Music Conference, Walt Disney Concert Hall, and TENOR Conference. He performs as a member of @ensembledecipher and produces broadcasts of contemporary music for Music from Other Minds on KALW in San Francisco and interviews with composers on the Other Minds Podcast.

Joseph Bohigian's "Stone Dreams" (2021)
--------------
STONE•HOUSE•STREET: Reactivating the Archive
Artists’ Television Access
992 Valencia St.
Tuesday, June 23, 7–9 p.m.

Armenian-American filmmakers Chris Atamian and Tina Bastajian, alongside composer Joseph Bohigian, delve into memory, loss, and the ways in which history continues to shape contemporary Armenian life.

Christopher Atamian's CivilNet series "House Culture" explores Armenia's historic house museums, offering an intimate look into the lives, environments, and creative legacies of influential cultural figures including poet Yeghishe Charents, filmmaker Sergei Parajanov and artist Lusik Aguletsi.

In Joseph Bohigian's Stone Dreams, filmed at Noratus Cemetery by Gabriel Atjian, a stone acts as an instrument calling forth fragments of folk songs to revive collective memory separated from physical sites of memory.

Tina Bastajian's short film, "A Tree Once Grew on Pushkin" (2009) examines issues of post-Soviet gentrification and loss in Armenia's capital city of Yerevan.

$10 cash at the door.

What a great joy it was last night to see our Corvo Records vinyls ⚡️⚡️ displayed in the "Broken Music Vol. 2” Exhibition at the @hamburger_bahnhof.

It’s like feeling at home in the company of Berliner artists, colleagues and friends for whom I hold in high esteem.

Among others, my solo LP "Tracing South" and our new double cassette "The Asocial Telepathic Ensemble" can be found for sale right at the Buchhandlung Walter König at the Hamburger Bahnhof Museum.
Yay for records!

The Asocial Telepathic Ensemble was initiated and curated by sound artist, composer, vocalist Alessandra Eramo and artist, writer and theorist Brandon LaBelle during the Covid-19 Lockdown in March 2021.

It is an international collaborative work of sound culture that brings together eleven composers, sound artists, curators, writers, and performers who simultaneously switched on their recording devices on 21 March 2021 for 15 minutes in a globe spanning telepathic recording session, documenting their thoughts, habits or audio surroundings, in an attempt to connect with each other. — No editing was done.

One year after, these recordings are released. Wound up on the tape reels and layered over each other, they become a symbol for collective pandemic memories.

Ready to be played back or archived.

The Asocial Telepathic Ensemble was initiated and curated by sound artist, composer and vocalist Alessandra Eramo and artist, writer and theorist Brandon LaBelle during the Covid-19 Lockdown in March 2021. It is an international collaborative work of sound culture that brings together eleven composers, sound artists, curators, writers and performers who simultaneously switched on their recording devices on 21 March 2021 for 15 minutes in a globe spanning telepathic recording session, documenting their thoughts, habits or audio surroundings, in an attempt to connect with each other. - No editing was done.

The result is documenting a historic moment in the 21st century, offering a very intimate glimpse into the reality of self isolation which has been experienced globally. Each recording is a strong poetic approach to daily routine and deals with communicating with artificial voices, loneliness, yearning for travelling or being bored. But these artistic statements are also talking about hope, transforming tragedy into irony, accepting bodily and mental fragility during the pandemic and beyond.
