Coral color study…some vintage and antique pieces which share the same saturated, salmon-y hues of orange which have been formed by coral colonies over centuries underwater in the Mediterranean.

On occasion we are commissioned to create awards or gifts for honorees or recipients at various organizations—and this happens to be one of our most recent favorites.

The JoAnne Kuehner Heart of Gold Award was commissioned by Hope for Haiti (@hopeforhaiti ) in recognition of the generous contributions and efforts of Jeff Lozama of the Man Dodo Humanitarian Foundation (@mandodo_fdn ), who has built multiple homes for and provided aid and empowerment for those displaced in the south of Haiti—the key here represents the keys given to those who now have new homes…and the keyhole represents the opening of new doors.

The key itself is a vintage brass antique key mounted to a vintage board decorated with an antique brass key-hole escutcheon—all of which were hand stamp-engraved in house. The key is designed to be removable from the wooden plaque so that it can be used, if so desired, as a paperweight.

A century-old love token which is as relevant today as it was then…now being worn by a contemporary Clara as a necklace charm! (Love tokens were charms made from polishing down one side of a coin and hand engraving it with initials or a name or even a scene, and which were collected in bracelets and worn by young women typically in the mid-to-late 19th century in Europe and North America.)

February has arrived…and with it comes this fellow, Cupid. Cupid is the ancient Roman god of love, the son of Venus (and various other gods, which one depends on who tells the story). What is certain is that the name Cupid comes from the word ‘Cupere’ in Latin, meaning ‘to desire’.
Cupid, a perennially portly and youthful scamp, is always known to have wings and to fly, as he is portrayed in this brooch, and he is associated most with the ability to shoot golden tipped arrows which induce love in whomever he aims them at. Less well known is that his quiver also contained arrows tipped with lead which caused forgetfulness, and so made a recipient fall out of love.

This Victorian brooch is made of Vulcanite, a baked sap from the rubber trees imported from the far Orient. This material was one of few available to Victorians which had thermoplastic qualities, meaning it could be poured and then hardened into a pre-made mold and thereby many of the same form could be created without re-hand-carving each intricate detail. This technique was a precursor to injection-molded plastic which wasn’t perfected for another half century. Meanwhile, its primary use in the 19th century was jewelry, decorative glass photograph cases and false teeth, meaning it was a material only available to the most wealthy of Victorians.

When they came looking for a match to the first engagement ring that had already been given and accepted, we had just the right thing…an antique, simple setting in gold of an old cut solitary diamond, slightly less ornate than the first (which is on the right in the second slide).
