Lost in the limpet and amber tones of this Rose of Sharon ring...in this unusual variation on the traditional amethyst Rose of Sharon style, the gilt incised rose and rose-cut diamond accent have been set into a large, round citrine whose bezel in turn has been embellished with black enamel using the Taille d'Épargne technique. The Rose of Sharon was popular in and around the 1860's, right in the middle of the Victorian era, and often represented being 'consumed with love', perseverance and longevity in relationships (a subtle reference to the hardiness of the flora found in Sharon, ironically not truly a rose) . This was a popular trope for Victorians in an era that celebrated and objectified sentimentality and love equally alongside mortality and death and were, not surprisingly, very popular during the American Civil War.

The use Taille d'Épargne was also common during this time period and the term loosely translates to 'spared cutting'. This kind of work is a relative of champlevé enameling where a design is lightly cut into troughs and channels in the surface of the metal and these shallow recesses are filled with black, opaque, vitrous enamel, creating sinuous and dramatic tracery within the surface of the gold.

Thea Grant runs a vintage jewelry store in Dumbo, Brooklyn together with her husband Nico. For this week’s Gem Story, Thea showed some turquoise jewelry pieces from the store’s collection.

“Turquoise varies widely in appearance. Some stones are pure, even blue, while others contain a visible matrix—veins of other minerals within the stone. Both can be valuable, depending on aesthetic preferences. Value in turquoise is highly subjective, based on color, texture, and pattern.

Turquoise has a long and rich history, with many meanings attributed to it. Ultimately, its appeal is deeply personal. Its colors, from bright blue to green, resemble water held in stone, with matrix patterns that evoke movement. This unique combination of color, texture, and history is what makes turquoise so enduringly fascinating”, Thea says.

Read more about the history of the turquoise jewelry now on Gem Stories on gem.app!

We are excited to invite you all to attend the official launch party/pop up of a taxidermy and bird themed jewelry collaboration between @kil_nyc & @gotham_taxidermy. We’ve been working on creating a beautiful fusion between bird bones and jewelry focusing on ravens and crows and intertwining our unique styles and skills. This has been a year in the making and we are excited to celebrate this milestone with all of you.

We are joined by the amazing jewelers @alexstreeternyc & @lilystreeternyc and hosted by the magnificent @theagrantdesign who will also be selling their beautiful wares so please come and visit and pick up an item or two to take home. All the pieces from our jewelry collaboration will be available for purchase and we will also have a select number of our other jewelry line items and a few vintage & antique pieces for sale. 10% of the proceeds from our collab will benefit organizations like @feministbirdclub & @nycploverproject so please come visit and support local art and organizations.

Tickets are available in our bio but admission is free. It’s just nice to know how many people are coming so we are adequately prepared. Please reach out if you have any questions and we will be happy to assist you. 🐦

Beautiful sterling silver rope knot bracelet from the min-century—this brand, Parisina, was designed by the French jeweler Marcel Boucher, known for his work in gold, who had this collection of all sterling silver jewelry made in Mexico. Stunning and ready to wear.
