POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

The semester is halfway through and every day has been an adventure in Washington D.C. I am blessed to be an Archer Fellow and an intern on Capitol Hill, and I’m going to miss my time here when December comes. So many memories and friends made!

Six Vaqueros were selected among 50 graduate students from UT System schools for the Graduate Archer Fellowship this summer. They returned to campus for the Fall 2026 semester empowered by their six-week experience in Washington D.C., where they took a summer courseload of three graduate classes in addition to completing a policy-related internship.
This summer’s Graduate Archers – all pursuing MBA’s or medical degrees at UTRGV School of Medicine (SOM) – learned how they could participate in advocacy and leadership to improve medication discovery and research for rare diseases, address disparities in access to healthcare, and create policy for long-lasting solutions.

Channeling Hope Foundation spent a year building a drug repurposing collaborative, a year validating a promising drug for #CLIFAHDD, and another year developing and raising funds for a clinical trial.

We’ve been told this is “quick”—that rare disease communities often wait decades to reach this point.

But for parents watching their children decline, it’s not fast enough.

Earlier this month, Shayanne Martin (Executive Director & Mom) spoke at an FDA meeting on drug repurposing, where she asked for policy changes in drug regulation to accelerate clinical research and regulatory review for ultra-rare disease treatments.

It was the culmination of a summer spent in Washington, DC as a @thearchercenter Policy Fellow learning about FDA pathways for rare diseases and researching strategies to incentivize and generate evidence more efficiently.

We’re grateful for how far the science has come. But we’re not willing to accept that the status quo is the fastest possible path to treatments.

Rare disease families don’t have decades to wait. We need a regulatory system built for ultra-rare diseases.

Weeks ago, two of our College Democrats announced they would be part of the three-person UTRGV delegation to the Archer Fellowship program, an internship that set them up in D.C. at an office of their choice. Today they both land in D.C. and begin new chapters of their career and life, we could not be prouder of them and we know they shall achieve great things wherever they go.

Good luck and safe travels.

LBJers 🤝 DC

Four LBJ students spent their summer in Washington, D.C., with @thearchercenter. Ella Barwick (MPAff '27), Jace Bartz (MGPS '27), Brianna Fuller (MPAff '27) and Luke Carnine (MGPS '27) balanced a full semester of classes alongside their internships.

And, of course, they made sure to leave plenty of time to explore the city! 🏛️🤘

Christina Lildharrie, a Ph.D. student in neuroscience at @UTAustinTX, spent her summer in Washington, D.C., learning how science and public policy can work together to create meaningful change. She’s one of 50 students selected from across The University of Texas System for the Graduate Archer Fellowship Program.

We recently asked her about her experience as an Archer Fellow. Read the full interview at the link in our bio.
