Golden hour over the Nahe | Seven vineyards, seven expressions of Riesling.

A few kilometres along the Nahe River, where volcanic formations, ancient sedimentary rocks and changing exposures create some of Germany’s most fascinating Riesling terroirs.

FELSENBERG | Schlossböckelheim
Steep volcanic slopes dominated by porphyry and melaphyre. Shallow, rocky soils producing powerful, concentrated Rieslings with firm structure and remarkable tension.

KUPFERGRUBE | Schlossböckelheim
Weathered volcanic rock, shaped by historic copper mining. Rieslings known for their intensity, smoky character, pronounced acidity and ageing potential.

HERMANNSBERG | Niederhausen
Steep, south-facing slopes with weathered volcanic soils. Concentrated, structured Rieslings combining depth, ripe fruit and precise acidity.

STEINBERG | Niederhausen
Weathered sedimentary soils with varying depths and water availability. Rieslings showing finesse, restrained fruit and elegant structure.

HERMANNSHÖHLE | Niederhausen
Dark slate, volcanic rock and steep southern exposure. One of Germany’s legendary Riesling sites, producing wines of exceptional complexity, precision and longevity.

BRÜCKE | Oberhausen
Deep loess-loam over weathered slate, directly beside the Nahe. Greater water retention and a distinctive microclimate create generous, textured Rieslings with remarkable balance.

KLAMM | Niederhausen
Steep, rocky slopes with slate and volcanic influences. Rieslings marked by concentration, vibrant acidity and a tightly defined structure.

Seven vineyards within a remarkably small geographical area, yet each with its own combination of geology, soil depth, water availability and microclimate.

Same grape. Different geology. Endless expressions of Riesling.

EDIT: Keller is of course not the ONLY dry Riesling loved by the fine wine community. That is way too absolute of a statement and I apologize.

It’s Sunday - and finally time for my final episode of UNLABELED!

This time: @kellerdalsheim - the winery that made German dry Riesling popular with global fine wine collectors - and is as one of very few international wines often drunk alongside the DRC’s of this world. Such as Burgundy, Keller wines are rare, only available upon allocation - and trade at a multiple of what other German Rieslings cost.

Max (@theartofriesling) and I were curious - how does it compare to other German Rieslings if you strip away the label? Can you actually tell the difference?

We took Kirchspiel, one of Keller’s entry level Grand Crus, and compared it to 5 other high end German Rieslings - blind.

Thank you so much to Max (@theartofriesling), who made the experiment possible - and to my sommeliers who took the time to taste the wines 🥹🥹😍

What do you guys think of the outcome? Are you surprised?

Many thanks to @josephinenhutte for lending us their glassware!

Episode 5/6 of my UNLABELED series is out.
This time featuring one of my hot picks when it comes to dry Riesling @weingut.wittmann.

Unfortunately this time his wine didn’t show as expected next to the other Rieslings in the experiment. However I want to remind that all wines chosen as part of UNLABELED are basically the formula 1 of dry Rieslings in Germany. And you can see it with the descriptions of the sommeliers. Everyone loved the wine. :)

And herewith a huge shoutout to @philipp_j_wittmann and his incredible Rieslings! 😍❤️❤️
