❤️‍⚕️ What an incredible first weekend of Healthcare Immersion!

Last Saturday, 14 Kern County high school students got an inside look at the world of healthcare through the Heart of the City Foundation’s Healthcare Immersion Program.

From touring Dignity Health Memorial Hospital and seeing specialized areas like the Cath Lab and EP Lab, to visiting the helipad, learning about new medical technology, and hearing firsthand stories from healthcare professionals — students experienced what it’s really like to pursue a career in medicine.

This is more than a program — it’s an opportunity to inspire and empower the next generation of healthcare leaders right here in Kern County. 🩺

A huge thank you to Dignity Health Memorial Hospital, California Cardiovascular Institute, CTEC, and everyone who helped make this experience possible!

And we’re just getting started… 👀
Next stop: California Cardiovascular Institute for a hands-on heart dissection with Dr. Singh!

For three decades, Dagny’s Coffee Company has become a well-known gathering staple in the downtown area. It’s not uncommon to see an impromptu get-together of friends, someone logging a few hours of work or a couple chatting while in line waiting for their order. Now, Dagny’s is the home of the Little Art Gallery, a small white box tucked away in its back room.

Dozens of people stopped by at the Little Art Gallery opening on September 26 and painted mini canvases to trade with others or add inside the gallery box. The hope is the Little Art Gallery will continue to grow as more people add their mark, and become another way for the community to connect, spark creativity and discover something new.

A little look back at an incredible day on the course!

Our 2nd Annual Phillip Campas Foundation Golf Tournament was such a success, and we are incredibly grateful to everyone who helped make the day so special. From our sponsors and golfers to our volunteers, supporters, and everyone who worked behind the scenes! Thank you!

It was an amazing day filled with great golf, great people, and so much support for our mission. We truly couldn’t do what we do without this incredible community behind us.

We can’t wait to share more photos, videos, and special moments from the tournament with you soon!

A special thank you to @thebeaconstudios for capturing the day so beautifully. We’re so grateful to have these moments to look back on! 🎥

Every child deserves a clean, healthy place to play, run, climb, and let their imagination soar. Last night, the City of Bakersfield adopted an update to its municipal code to make all 69 city parks smoke-free. This policy goes beyond state minimum requirements, making all areas of Bakersfield's parks including sidewalks, parking lots, and recreational fields smoke-free. This helps create cleaner, healthier spaces where families can play, gather, and enjoy the outdoors without exposure to secondhand smoke.

Congratulations to our Blue Zones Project Bakersfield Policy Team for helping make this happen! Here’s to more fresh air, more playtime, and more healthy moments!

For every person who rolled out a mat and participated in our 10-week Mat Pilates Moai, each Saturday session became more than a chance to find new ways to find movement or flexibility. Each session brought a diverse group of individuals together to the nX Annex Art Gallery for an hour each week to slow down, find movement and be present. More than that, Moai leader Dani Wallace created a space where each person she guided through an exercise felt safe to show up exactly as they are, took what they needed and encouraged each other along the way.

And we’re not quite ready to roll up the mats just yet. The Mat Pilates Moai will be back soon for another round. Stay tuned for details.

For 10 years, Books in Motion®, a Kern Dance Alliance and Kern County Library program, has brought stories to life through live performances to inspire a lifelong love of reading in kids and their families. It’s a program our team has loved supporting this year. More than 7,000 people visited Kern County library branches and local schools this summer to watch performers from local organizations and schools transform beloved stories into interactive experiences that get kids moving and ready to learn. Books in Motion is a fun way to put two Blue Zones Project principles into practice: Loved Ones First by giving families a chance to connect and enjoy something together, and Move Naturally by getting kids up, moving and having fun while they learn.

“For many children reading can feel very intangible and what we’re doing is making reading tangible. Even if the children can’t read the words on the page, they’re so inspired after the live dance performance to open the book and try to read those words that brought the book to life.”
Andrea Hansen, KDA executive director

Bakersfield’s summer temperatures consistently top the century mark, making even the simplest activities challenging. Hosted by BZP Bakersfield and Skye's the Limit Institute of Wellness, Stay Cool, Stay Safe event on July 21 brought together volunteers and community partners to share education, resources, and support on ways to be prepared during hot weather.

Nearly 100 attendees received food, connected with community resources, and learned how to prevent heat-related illness through hydration, sun protection, and other summer safety tips. Thanks to the support of our volunteers and partners at Skye’s the Limit Institute of Wellness, this event helped make staying healthy this summer a little easier for families across Bakersfield.
