When Ben Butcher’s music students at Warringa Park School suggested reaching out to artists they admired for collaborations, he didn’t expect Snoop Dogg to actually show up.

But after the hip-hop legend announced his visit to Melbourne for the AFL Grand Final in September, Butcher and his students shot their shot with a song called Drip and a cheeky Instagram video invite.

Butcher runs Radio On, a music project at Warringa Park School that’s been going since 2014. Every Thursday, he works with one group of year 10 and 11 students focused entirely on writing, recording and releasing music as artists.

Radio On works with students across a wide range of support needs, some who struggle with things like vocalising sounds or holding instruments. Butcher finds ways to engage everyone, recording their expressions and turning them into music they can enjoy together. Each year produces a small album of the best recordings, with occasional video clips added to the mix.

Radio On’s 2025 album is out now via Bandcamp.
Meanwhile, students are already working on their next invitation: Kendrick Lamar and Doechii.

Thank you @hadamadgrin for this amazing post celebrating 10 years since I released my first solo record. I couldn’t have done it without you mate and so lucky I got to do it with you and Ben. ❤️ From Adam’s Insty… “10 years ago today, my beautiful and talented friend Adalita released her debut self-titled solo album. Having fronted the seminal Magic Dirt since the early ‘90s, her bandmate Dean Turner planted the seed of an idea for Ad to record a solo record. Tragically, Dean never got to see the release of this album, but he was there to produce much of the recording with his gentle guiding spirit.

Before Dean passed, Ad and I travelled back to the birthplace of Magic Dirt, to the small coastal Victorian beach town of Breamlea. There we filmed the beginnings of the video for “Hot Air”, with Ad floating through the tea tree bushes and making her way down to the beach at night.

Between 2009 and 2011, we made four music videos and a short making-of video for the album. I am so proud of the art we made together, and helping Ad bring her creative vision to life is something I hold most sacred. Working on these videos with Adalita was such an incredibly creative time, and a deeply satisfying collaboration. Ben Butcher was a big part of it too, with his inventive lighting ideas and beautiful behind-the-scenes photography using his collection of old film cameras and lenses.

It's been a few years, but I've never stopped dreaming about making more art with Adalita. She's a totally uncompromising artist who has been an inspiration ever since I saw my first Magic Dirt performance in our hometown of Geelong almost 30 years ago.

Here is a playlist with HD versions of all the videos we made together:
