We're open! 🍂

Blackwater Scapes is officially live!

Blackwater Scapes brings that world to your aquarium. Natural botanicals, carefully sourced and curated, plus guides to prepare them the right way.

It's Puerto Rico's first shop dedicated to natural botanicals for blackwater aquariums, terrariums and paludariums: leaves, seed pods, cones, bark and wood, picked by hand for real habitats.

Join the email list (link in bio) and get 10% off your first purchase.

Thank you to everyone who followed along this week. 🙏

“Black Coffee” My entry into the 2026 @aquashella Aquascaping Contest. ☕️ 🎵

I am so proud of how this tank turned out. Lots of fun hardscape, bold colors, botanicals, and a little bit of whimsy and fun ✨

It is such a privilege to be amongst a group of such talented artists. I am incredibly grateful for the friendship we all have and the time we get to spend together doing what we love. You should all be so, so proud of the work you did this weekend.

I am especially thankful to our judges, @daichi_araki_ada and @juri_js for making the journey to the garden state to provide such wonderful insight and words of wisdom. I am especially grateful for the time you both took to speak with me. @the_aquascaping_ryno, you have raised the bar for competitive live scaping in the United States. I am so thankful for everything you do for all of us. 🫶🏼

Lastly, shout out to @globalfishcompany for absolutley KILLING IT this weekend. Literally were so busy the only photo I have is from halfway through setup 😂 I am so proud of everything we’re building together.

What a weekend. 🐠🌿🏆

Competing at AquaShella was an incredible experience, and I’m beyond grateful to everyone who helped make this project—and this weekend—possible. @joshdeantankyou 🙏

From the countless hours of planning, building, planting, and perfecting every detail, to the people behind the scenes who supported me along the way, this wouldn’t have happened without you.

A huge THANK YOU to all of the amazing sponsors who believed in the project and helped bring it to life. Your support means more than I can put into words. 🙏

And to everyone who stopped by, talked with me, shared the build, encouraged me, or simply took the time to appreciate the work—thank you. The support from this community is what makes events like AquaShella so special.

I’m proud of what we created, proud to have competed alongside so many talented artists and builders, and already looking forward to what comes next.

Every Friday, share your fish enjoying live foods, frozen foods, or natural snacks — from wild bettas hunting larvae to cichlids, gouramis, tetras, and more showing their natural feeding behavior.

Use #SnackFriday and tag @blackwaterscapes so we can build together a weekly feed of real fish behavior, natural instincts, and better aquarium enrichment.

Let the hunt begin.

Collecting your own botanicals is a rewarding part of the botanical method aquarium hobby. But unless you’re keeping fish found in the habitats you collected them, it’s going to turn your aquarium into a blackwater or botanical method aquarium (Rasboras don’t encounter oak leaves in the wild 👀). There is nothing wrong with this!!! if you have safe oak trees where you live, you can collect them. Follow the preparation instructions on my website, using 2 to 3 botanicals or a small handful per 5 gallons of aquarium volume and then wait for these leaves to fully condition and go through what we call ‘the goo-phase’. Many of these terms that we use for the botanical method aquarium are not part of “standard aquarium husbandry”… which is why a dictionary of sorts is currently underway to be added onto the “How-to” tab on BettaBotanicals.com #bettabotanicals #botanicalmethodaquarium #oakleavesforaquariums #blackwateraquarium #biotopeaquariums
