In partnership with the Tulsa Artist Fellowship, we are pleased to host the Glassell Lecture, “In Conversation with Artists Brian Ellison and Kalup Linzy.”

This conversation brings together conceptual artist and community leader Brian Ellison, founder of the Black Man Project in Houston; and video and performance artist Kalup Linzy, founder of Queen Rose Art House in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Moderated by Lisa Volpe, curator of photography at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the panel explores how the intersections of art, community, and personal narrative that appear in both artists’ practices can reflect and reshape the communities in which we exist.

Long before a turntable scratched or an eight-bar grid was laid down, his pen invented the cadence of modern hip-hop, translating the syncopated pulse of the avenue into an unyielding literary canon. He was a cultural architect whose vernacular was forged in the unfiltered breath of ordinary Black folk, treating the blues not as a lament, but as high philosophy. As an ethnographer and co-conspirator to Zora, Langston shared her obsession with collecting the raw, unwashed folklore of our people. Yet his path was complex—navigating the delicate, often transactional dance of white patronage and artistic survival while keeping his artistic integrity tethered to the dirt. He pulled from a queer, brilliant sensibility that made our interior lives both otherworldly and intimately familiar, rendering us central, human, and holy. Mule Bone that legendary, lightning-struck collaboration with Zora remains the ultimate testament to their creative friction, a brilliant testament that famously fractured their alliance over authorship and ego. But the split was never the final word; it was simply another crossroads. As we continue celebrating the Community Artists' Collective's 40th anniversary through our Road to 40 retrospective, our porch stays open. We are gathering for an intimate, participatory group reading of Mule Bone: A Comedy of Negro Life (1930) at 4111 Fannin Street, Suite 100A, Houston, TX. Come ready to read, converse, and help us reconcile the very piece that severed their tie—because building community isn't about avoiding the break; it's about having the nerve to sit down and mend it together.$
