I feel this too much, if I’m honest. The invisible burden we carry as Black folks, still expected to navigate trauma as normal when nothing about it is. Black boyness expires way before it should, and that collective grief, though shared, is far too heavy to carry.

I think of Nolan Wells and see my inner boy, my son, my nephew, insert someone you love. Nolan seems like the kind of kid I’d hope my son would call a friend. Black boys deserve to grow old, deserve safety, deserve to preserve their boyness just as long as their counterparts.

Thinking about you Nolan.

In partnership with the Tulsa Artist Fellowship, we are pleased to host the Glassell Lecture, “In Conversation with Artists Brian Ellison and Kalup Linzy.”

This conversation brings together conceptual artist and community leader Brian Ellison, founder of the Black Man Project in Houston; and video and performance artist Kalup Linzy, founder of Queen Rose Art House in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Moderated by Lisa Volpe, curator of photography at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the panel explores how the intersections of art, community, and personal narrative that appear in both artists’ practices can reflect and reshape the communities in which we exist.

Free and open to the public.

📅 Wednesday, September 30, 6 p.m.
📍 Glassell School of Art, Favrot Auditorium

Join us on Thursday, September 24th, for our first public literary salon!

To See and Be Seen is a public literary salon, featuring live readings, facilitated conversation, and reflection.

We are bringing together writers, artists, and community members across generations and backgrounds to engage thoughtfully with the work of local writers to explore the topic of Black Femicide.

We encourage you to bring the men in your lives: husbands, boyfriends, uncles, nephews, cousins, and friends. Their presence and participation are important to this conversation, and we welcome them into the space.

This is a big deal for us, and we do not take this work lightly.

RSVP at Luma.com/SOTY

Special thanks to our sponsors and collaborators!

Season 2 is upon us! BOOKED WITH THE BRUZZ is back in August, and we are looking for a good 20 more Bruzz to lock in with us. Women are welcome......to root for us from afar! This book club is still for the bros only, and our loved ones who identify. 10 books, ranging from Black radical politics to Black feminism, from copaganda to media literacy. Complete with supplemental texts, handouts, and a little food and drink. Hosted by Kindred Stories, and CLASS bookstore, and brought to you by myself and BlackManProject. If you, or a bro you know, is interested in reading with us and not in isolation as we tend to do, hit the LINK IN BIO. Signups close in ONE WEEK! Biggest love to @preshusguide for the luscious visuals, and super love to @chaysetheartist for being my ride or die! by @theblackmanproject

BOOKED WITH THE BRUZZ.

Last summer, I sat with @playdirtymusic and told him how frustrated I was that “niggas don’t read”. He said that was a lie, and if I want more to do so, make the space.

A year later, almost 20 Bruzz done read 10 books, umpteen pages, 5011 chapters and had all types of agreements, arguments, protests and side quests about these texts. It was a beautiful year, but there is more to be done.

We need about 16 more Bruzz for SEASON TWO. Beginning in August. More to come.

For now, consider coming to the @communityartistscollective tomorrow for the brellhooks listening. Whether basketball or rap, I love to make art out of “low brow” culture that the gatekeepers don’t care for. Because that’s where my people at.

See yall tomorrow! by @theblackmanproject

The universe is shifting… but the real question is:

Have you checked in with yourself?

Before we chase more, we create space.
Before we move forward, we get still.

Summer Check In
Meditation. Sound. Community. Alignment.

Your peace is the practice.

See you on the rooftop!
