What a fantastic collection! Hope you’ve finished the first four stories in the collection.
🌻Mallika Homes was the winner of the O Henry prize. Sindya Bhanoo beautifully writes about elderly upper middle class Tamilian parents in an elderly home and the ‘sons and daughters they lost to the Foreign’. The friendships in the home and it ends with a lie that the protagonist who walks 8000 steps around Malliga Homes tells, and then imagines telling again.
🌻A life in America showed the different sides of being Indian in America and the cultural divide. When the Professor is under the scrutiny of the university because of a complaint, one wonders whether he merely forgot to transform himself into Indian-American virtues and stubbornly thought of himself as an Indian among the Indians moving to America. On his part, he thinks he was helping Indian students transition into the new country, but some students read this over-friendliness and the work they do at his residence as passive aggressive moves. Was it power dynamics at play that hurt the students? Or the prof’s failure to understand boundaries? And his failure to acknowledge his own power in an academic institution and understand that community values could be misinterpreted by power dynamics? Heart breaking but also you wonder why the Prof didn’t think about the unbalanced power dynamics.
🌻Buddymoon about a divorced woman who isn’t invited to her daughter’s buddymoon after her wedding. It’s a story about marriage, choosing yourself, alienation with daughters, unexpected consequences, and money restricting relationships. Beautiful and made me cry. How are so many things beyond our control? What’s the right choice?
🌻Amma, a fictional interpretation of Jayalalitha’s childhood but told in the plural first person, and through the gaze of her classmates was a literary treat.
