thought i would document what i read in a week. this was fun! and to be honest, as someone who doesn’t do wrapups and the like,i would even forget to write down the pages at the end of the day. i am thinking of doing this once a month? maybe? I don’t think I can keep up with documenting every week! these are approx number of pages because most of these were digital galleys of advanced reading copies. it was a great reading week, and hopefully there are more of such reading weeks this year. thank god for e-readers!

excuse my typos in the photos!! that’s what happens when you type too fast after reading a good book! this short story collection titled my dear you by rachel khong was a great read! the stories are whimsical (not sure if that’s the right word), bordering between reality and fantasy, and talk about themes of race, identity, friendship and more. swipe to see some stories that I loved in the book. 2026 is off to a good start.
thank you to @penguinrandomhouse for an advanced reading copy. this collection releases in April, 2026.

determined to try again and read this tome in 2026. my reason is not because it has been on my TBR forever or because i want to read classics or because i want to appreciate literature. i simply want to try and read a book that needs my attention, that i cannot multitask with something else like TV or phone, and i want to force my mind to not wander so much. reading this, with my shortened attention spans, is quite a task. i find my mind wandering too often, i would suddenly remember a meme, i would want to check that tab i had opened on the web browser, I would feel thirsty and so on. but slowly and steadily, i hope i will conquer my mind and this big book. i am just a few chapters into section 3.

funny enough, i began reading brothers karamazov by dostoesky in 2025. I finished close to two sections and posted on social media. would you believe I did not read a single page after that. hope I didn’t jinx it again by posting now.

i’ve been dipping into ‘the lonely city’ the last few months; sometimes it’s a late night ten minute read by the night lamp, sometimes it’s a half hour morning read with coffee, heavily distracted with my phone, sometimes it’s a pseudo intellectual move saying i’ll read a book when some TV show that doesn’t catch my interest is on, only to end up in a watch rot of the very same series, an unopened book on my lap and sleepy eyes. which is why it feels like i’ve been reading this book forever; understanding it in my own way. it’s a famous book, so there’s no dearth of reviews online, but i feel no compulsion to go looking for thoughts of friends/readers whom i follow/anyone. i liked going into the read alone, sometimes neglecting that itch to google something written in the book, sometimes resorting to google (very tricky because you do not even realize how your distracted mind leads you to social media and you are left with unread pages and a cold coffee at the end of your free slot). i am not even half way through the book; but i love this ritual of dipping in and out; reading even though i know i would not finish this before year end; reading with no plans to talk about the book on social media or write about it. in a way it’s just me, the city, my loneliness, and a book that tries to make sense of loneliness. it feels strangely liberating. here are some (unaesthetic) photos simply because instagram needs photos to say a few words.

December calls for red books and endless hot cups of coffee. I love that the new novella Love Divine by the fantastic Ysenda Maxtone Graham is a bright red!! I suspect it is going to be a cozy read which are great this time of the year. Call me shallow, but I am LOVING the feel of the book in my hands. Sigh! Precious! I was really drawn by the description that “it (the book) may well unleash your inner Barbara Pym – but it comes with a decidedly contemporary twist.” (wow!!). As someone who enjoys Barbara Pym novels and also adored Ysenda Maxtone Graham’s boarding school books, I am thrilled to be reading Love Divine.

some quick reviews for my recent reads:
💚Maggie; or a man and a woman walk into a bar by Katie Yee was a quick read inspite of tackling big themes of a broken marriage, infidelity, and tumour diagnosis. The protagonist made me think with her detached way of dealing with so many problems on her plate.
🔪I had so much fun with Holly Jackson’s Not Quite Dead Yet, about a twenty something woman trying to solve her murder before she meets her inevitable death. Lots of twists; the red herrings leave you guessing. The book reads like a YA mystery.
🍊A Guardian and a Thief by Megha Majumdar took me by surprise because it’s incredibly readable and very engaging. You feel so much for the characters. It’s set in a future Kolkata, wrecked by climate change and food scarcity. There’s corruption, humanity and the near impossible dream to leave for a better reality. The ending broke my heart.
🛵I Deliver Parcels for a Living by Hu Anyan, transl by Jack Hargreaves is a thought provoking memoir of a gig worker in China, told with dead pan humor. It is quite an eye opener about the perils of the capitalist system and how gig workers earn their living and a first person account makes it all the more an enlightening read.
📦She didn’t see it coming by Shari Lapena is what you call a popcorn thriller in every sense of the word. Twist-filled mystery about a woman missing from her apartment, with no record of her leaving the building.

Are any of these on your TBR?

this book REALLY MESSES with your head. imagine a woman obsessed with her husband, to the point she observes every single move of his and comes up with wild theories! I absolutely enjoyed my husband by maud ventura, translated from french by emma ramadan. and that’s one of the two books (the other is a fast paced read into the mind of a rising celebrity) i wrote about in the newsletter for women in translation month. swipe for snippets and read the whole thing on reshsusan.substack.com

scattered all over the earth is a post apocalyptic novel about a near future situation where boundaries between countries have dissolved. some countries no longer exist. the protagonist has lived in three countries and invented a new home made language (pan-Scandinavian) and teaches immigrant kids at denmark this language. written by yoko tawada and translated by margaret mitsutani.

i am not usually picking up books strictly based on the season. but some books definitely read better in a particular season, right? a cosy magical read during winter, or even a bleak thriller. cosy vs horror vs gothic in autumn. one book that reads better in summer is my brilliant friend by elena ferrante. I’ve read it many times. i often say it isn’t a favorite read but how do you explain reading it again and again? maybe I love book 2 in the Neapolitan quartet the most.
