JustSpokeToā€¦. THE BREAKING POINT Four short, modern, operatic pieces presented in two parts at the Cockpit Theatre, as part of the TeĢ‚te aĢ€ TeĢ‚te: Opera Festival. Modern operaā€¦oxymoron? No. Itā€™s a question of context: if the battle scene, the Bond bedding, or the Championā€™s league final, lays it out, we get it. But do we always need our hands held? With the opera, we have the libretto: the words, the music made flesh. BREAKING POINT offers stories on the edge. In one, we have a fight; in another an invasive object, otherwise known as the damn TV, seeks to intervene in a coupleā€™s brittle relationship; in another, a young boy starts to make sense of the strange land that surrounds him. I spoke to the three of the four composers, all students at The Royal Academy of Music, each one inspired by their own sensitivities towards an exploration of how the modern world presses upon us. Does that make sense? Writing about music is likeā€¦ So, we must listen. It must become for you its own provocation. How do we listen to modern, classical opera? 1: Stop asking stupid questions. 2: Switch off that part of the brain that thinks everything is 1+1. 3: Donā€™t let the branding (ā€œRoyalā€ etc) get in the way of your own sensuality. One piece asks, How do you connect? Iā€™m not writing this for opera buffs, Iā€™m thinking about friends and family whoā€™ve let this form fall awayā€¦for some it was never there. But arenā€™t we awash with cheap gags and tech fads? These artists are experts on the verge, offering something curious and divine. Sincerity and lack of cynicism can be impressive. Now think back to that film soundtrack or that crowning achievement of an Olympian or mountaineer: now switch out the opera that makes those moments soar, replace with ā€¦ ABBA, Oasis, T Swift, Kissā€¦.? The beauty slumps. Not everything has to have a punchline. Not everything needs a gang chorus. Not all opera is ā€œelites only.ā€ Treat yourself to a touch of divinity. Address your BREAKING POINT.
