RUBY RUBY RUBY RUBAAY!
This is Octopus rubescens, also known as the ruby octopus. It is a commonly occurring shallow-water octopus found on the North American West Coast.

The ruby octopus feeds on a wide variety of gastropods, bivalves, barnacles, clams, scallops, and crabs. It will often drill a hole through the shell of its prey to deliver venom to more easily open the shell.

A red octopus lives for around two years and grows to a mantle length (the main body of the octopus) of 8–10 cm, and arm length of 30–40 cm.

O. rubescens was the first invertebrate in which individual personalities were demonstrated… Did you know! In the 2016 Disney Pixar animation, Finding Dory the East Pacific red octopus named Hank, suffers trauma from a lost arm - Dory calls him a “septopus”. The real reason for Hank’s seven arms is because the animators couldn’t fit all eight on his model!

Some clips from an amazing encounter in the fog. The blanket of white muted the wind and gentle rolling of the ocean, all that was left was the pack was the sounds of the animals as they ghosted in and out of the fog. It was a treasure to share this moment with a good friend, and also lead to some special discoveries.

Late fall #steelhead fishing is probably some of my favourite days to be out. When that sun hits you and gives you that extra warm to feel the tug of the line it’s amazing. Oldie but a goodie.

What it’s like stand among the pack on a foggy morning.

There are many amazing types of wildlife to encounter in this lifetime, but standing among sea wolves holds a very special place.

It’s very different from the fairytales, but a fairytale nonetheless!

Steelhead season has been in full swing though the numbers haven’t been great. I have always loved getting out since I was young and try to get my kids out for it too. Whether it’s fishing or enjoying nature my children come too. These are from years past and really make me glad to be living in the #skeena region.
