How can we make climate ideas more bankable? 🌍🚀

This thought has stayed with us as we reflect on the incredible #energy at the Climate Bankability Hackathon in Abuja.

The pitch event was hosted by Ángeles Sostenibles, in partnership with @lagosclimatenetwork. It brought together innovators, investors, financiers, and ecosystem stakeholders to explore the future of climate innovation in Nigeria.

One thing stood out:
Our young people have the ideas.

Having the ideas is a first step, refining the ideas through pitch sessions helps to make them bankable. That is why conversations around bankability matter. For climate solutions to reach the people and communities that need them, they first need to be bankable before they can attract the capital to grow.

Thank you to the innovators, judges, partners, investors, and everyone who contributed to making the Hackathon possible.

Here is a look back at some memorable moments from Abuja.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐍𝐢𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐬𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐦𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 — 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐩𝐮𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝. 🇳🇬🌱

On 22 August, we witnessed what can happen when bold ideas, climate innovation, and the right ecosystem come together.

The Climate Bankability Hackathon brought together young innovators from across Nigeria, giving them a platform to present solutions, receive expert feedback, and take an important step towards making their ideas more scalable, impactful, and investment-ready.

From the pitches to the conversations, the questions, the connections, and ultimately the winners the day was a reflection of the growing energy and ambition within Nigeria’s climate and sustainability ecosystem.

A huge thank you to everyone who made the Hackathon possible:

The Lagos Climate Network team: @thecarbonbuddy, @maziekeh Ekeh, @ekhostriumph, and @omo.olowu Olowu.

The Angeles Sostenibles team: Barka Sajou and Musa.

And to every contestant, judge, partner, supporter, and member of the ecosystem who showed up and contributed to the success of the day — thank you.

A lot of AI conversations online stop at the result.
People show the model, the output, accuracy score, the fancy demo.

What you rarely see is everything that happens in the background.

Last weekend, I had the pleasure of celebrating @sustyvibes at 10. Ten and Thriving. Ten years of caring for the environment and taking action. I have been a part of this ever growing community for 8 out of those years and I can say that it has been an absolute joy learning and caring more about the environment than I ever thought possible.

This anniversary celebration was also a reunion because I was able to spend time with people who have held my hand through the years on my sustainability journey. We laughed, ate, went down memory lane and created new memories. Oh, I also made a new friend. That was fun.

Experiencing the anniversary celebration reminded me that you truly can do big things from a small place. Also, a lot of people’s dreams are connected to your purpose. If @dzennypha_ didn’t start that blog 10 years ago, none of this would be happening. Happy 10 years anniversary, @sustyvibes. Here’s to 10 more🥂

♻️ 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚 𝐰𝐚𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐰𝐫𝐚𝐩 𝐮𝐩 𝐀𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐥 𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲.

An insightful and honestly eye-opening evening with Mr Soji Ogunnaike; where we unpacked a topic many industries still overlook:

Waste in the Media - Entertainment industry.

From production sets to events, waste management is often treated as an afterthought, with little to no systems for reduction, reuse, or repurposing.
And the truth?

This isn’t just an entertainment problem.

It cuts across multiple industries.

Another hard truth we discussed: Collaboration is still lacking.
Across sectors in Africa, silos are slowing down real progress.
If we’re serious about sustainability, we must move from:
🚫 Working in isolation
➡️ To collaborate for shared impact

And here's where it gets even more interesting: climate finance has a real role to play in all of this. Not just in infrastructure, but in supporting sustainable production systems, green innovation inside creative industries, and the media platforms that are telling Africa's climate story. Because the stories we tell shape the world we build.
