When someone is terminally ill, “Don’t give up” may not be the encouragement you think it is.

Those words, however well-intentioned, can place an unfair burden on someone who is already carrying more than we can imagine.

They are not obligated to keep fighting to make YOU feel better.

Choosing comfort over treatment isn’t giving up. Being exhausted isn’t giving up. Accepting death isn’t giving up.

Not every battle needs a battle cry.

Sometimes the most loving thing you can do is stop trying to find the right words, show up, and simply be there.

This day serves as a reminder that recovery is not only physical but also deeply personal, and that informed choices can help restore confidence and quality of life.

The Zonta Club of Riverside, a service organization committed to advancing the status of women, has proudly partnered with The CARE Project, a nonprofit supporting breast cancer patients and survivors. Together, they work to provide resources, workshops, and community events that address both the practical and emotional aspects of breast cancer recovery. Through this collaboration, survivors gain access to peer support groups, educational materials, and financial assistance for post-surgical needs.

By joining forces, the Zonta Club of Riverside and The CARE Project amplify awareness, break down stigmas, and ensure that no survivor navigates the journey alone. Their shared mission on National BRA Day—and throughout the year—reflects a commitment to compassion, empowerment, and hope for all those impacted by breast cancer.

Breast Cancer Awareness Day, observed on October 13, is a vital opportunity to shine a light on the realities of metastatic (stage IV) breast cancer and to honor those affected by the disease. It’s a day dedicated not only to raising awareness but also to fostering hope, support, and action toward better treatments and, ultimately, a cure.

Breast cancer has touched my life deeply—my mother battled it twice with incredible strength before ultimately passing away from pancreatic cancer in 2019. Even one of my beloved dogs faced the same disease, reminding me that cancer’s reach is wide and indiscriminate. So many of us have lost someone dear to this fight, carrying both grief and the urgency to make a difference.

Since I have had cancer, I have had to be checked twice a year now. It’s very important for everyone not just women to be checked.

This year, the Zonta Club of Riverside is proud to join forces with The CARE Project, a nonprofit organization committed to providing emotional and practical support to breast cancer patients and survivors. Together, we aim to amplify awareness while directly helping those in our community who are navigating the challenges of breast cancer.

This October, let’s unite in compassion, advocacy, and generosity—because every act of kindness brings us one step closer to a world without breast cancer.

Let us, honor those we’ve lost, uplift those still fighting, and work toward a future with more hope.

Today, 359 female judo competitors, ranging from toddlers to moms of participants, came together for the annual “Fight for the Cure” Judo Tournament, combining friendly competition, strength, and determination for an incredible cause. The tournament was organized by Sensei Brian and @riversideyouthjudoclub , a youth program supported by the Riverside Police Foundation.

This year’s tournament is expected to raise more than $30,000, bringing the total raised since the tournament began in 2015 to over $160,000!

Even more impressive, 100% of all funds raised are donated directly to two amazing Riverside organizations, @thepinkribbonplace and @thecareprojectinc which provide much-needed support to individuals and families affected by breast and ovarian cancers.

This year’s tournament medals also honor Rena “Rusty” Kanokogi, a legendary pioneer who helped pave the way for women in judo.

A huge THANK YOU to the organizers, competitors, families, volunteers, sponsors, and supporters who continue to make this tournament such a tremendous success. Your dedication is making a real difference in the lives of those battling cancer right here in our community!

We are proud to spotlight Christina Villanueva — a two-time breast cancer survivor and dedicated volunteer with The CARE Project, Inc. as a mentor to newly diagnosed.

During her second battle with breast cancer, Christina faced the heartbreaking reality so many patients experience: being unable to work while trying to keep up with insurance, utilities, groceries, and the everyday needs of her children.

The CARE Project was able to step in with financial assistance when she needed it most. But our relationship with Christina didn’t end when treatment did. Today, she gives back by volunteering with TCP and helping us extend that same CARE to others walking through breast cancer.

Christina’s journey is a beautiful example of what community looks like: receiving support when you need it and, when you’re able, becoming part of that support for someone else.

We are grateful to have Christina as part of our CARE family.

Breast Cancer Awareness Day 2026 serves as a global reminder of the importance of early detection, education, and support for those affected by breast cancer. Observed during Breast Cancer Awareness Month each October, this day encourages communities to wear pink, share information, and promote screenings that can save lives.

Breast cancer is not a single disease—it comes in several forms. Common types include ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), a non-invasive cancer confined to the milk ducts; invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC), the most prevalent type, which begins in the ducts and spreads to surrounding tissue; and invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC), which starts in the milk-producing lobules. Less common types include inflammatory breast cancer and triple-negative breast cancer, each with unique characteristics and treatment challenges.

While breast cancer is often associated with women, men can also develop it. Though rare, male breast cancer typically arises from the small amount of breast tissue men have, and awareness is crucial because symptoms are often overlooked.

On Breast Cancer Awareness Day 2026, the message is clear: early detection saves lives, knowledge empowers patients, and support strengthens communities—regardless of gender.
