Life Lately. I am in one of the busiest seasons of my life but I could not be more grateful for all of the opportunities I've been blessed with. After navigating the treacherous job market for two years, I leaned into my talents, gifts, and networks in service of others, and I’ve been rewarded tenfold. I'm often asked, “Aya, what do you do?” So here’s a snapshot. 1. Look fly 2. Receive awards 3. Conduct storytelling in college essays workshops 4. Read banned books 5. Train for my first half-marathon 6. Eat well 7. Serve 8. Celebrate love 9. Support local artists 10. Coordinate school board forums with friends 11. Read and write articles 12. Celebrate next chapters 13. Run 14. Build an art collecting collective 15. Consult and educate 16. Lean into the holiday season #Detroit #Education

In 2018, when Return of Idlewild was just an idea, Tony WHLGN helped give it a visual identity. He designed our first poster. Our first merch. The imagery that many people still associate with Return of Idlewild today. Eight years later, as we prepare to return, it felt right to return to the artist who helped shape the first chapter. Tony’s work has always balanced history, symbolism, and imagination. The 2026 poster is no different. Every winding path, hidden detail, and visual cue invites you deeper into the story of Idlewild and the journey back to it. My first NAPOWRIMO / Autism Awareness/Acceptance Month recap ✨ April was everything Poetry. I gathered, I spoke, I performed, I listened, I dissolved into goo and refound my human form, I laughed, I wrote, I edited, I submitted, I read, I lived, I inhaled/exhaled poetry. I left April exhausted and inspired, and with 17 new poems (one of which got picked up for publication!) in my pocket. Creativity was my companion in a way I’ve never appreciated more. April also happens to be Autism Awareness/acceptance month, and being an autistic girl-about-town during this time meant I had my fair share of meltdowns and shutdowns. I share openly about my diagnosis because many don’t. I want to illuminate what life as a creative, Level 1 Autistic person can look like (my personal experience only). I’ve had my official diagnosis for just over a year, and it’s been a learning curve. Entering new spaces, changing routines, and high levels of socialization (especially with new people) takes a lot out of me. My friends sometimes didn’t hear from me for days at a time. I was lost in the sauce of the month, so it wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows. I also met so many new, wonderful people because I stretched past my comfort zone. Honoring my capacity AND stretching past it at times have both grown me in different ways. It’s a both/and. All in all I found a lot of new grace and acceptance within myself this month, and even more gratitude for my community. Akwaaba. I travelled HOME (Ghana/Nigeria) for the first time and couldn’t imagine a warmer welcome. Cried on the descent cause I couldn’t believe it took me so long. But home has no timer on when it welcomes you. It just does. 1. Art Hotel, Lagos, Nigeria 2. Got to kick it in Ghana with my Brother from another, Kwaku.
