$🍎 GCC’s 2025-2026 School Year Wrap-up 🍎 We were thrilled to engage 1,142 students in place-based environmental education over the course of 70 field trips this past school year. Whether students were deepening their understanding of the relationships between Gowanus flora, fauna and themselves, contributing to routine water quality testing of the Canal, or familiarizing themselves with the functions of our neighborhood’s green and gray infrastructure, we are proud of our role in educating the next generation of environmental leaders. Special thanks to our Education Program Senior Manager @jenkeplerbirds, our education interns, and the GCC staff members who helped enrich these students’ classroom curriculum. ➡️ Swipe to look back on a school year full of curiosity, collaboration, and joyful discovery! Students get up close and personal with preserved specimens. Students use a dissolved oxygen probe to measure the health of the Gowanus Canal. Education Program Senior Manager @jenkeplerbirds and the education interns gather with students participating in the Mussel Habitat Project, a collaboration between Brooklyn Collaborative HS, the @gowanusdredgers and GCC, to learn about combined sewer overflows and their effect on the waterway. 🦀 Did we catch this blue crab or did it catch us? 🤏 Students lend a hand to our Stewardship Manager Reginald Germain to sift compost. Students work together to test the turbidity of the Gowanus Canal. Students gather on the 300 Huntington Esplanade for a bit of bird watching during an Urban Ecology field trip. Students shared their findings from the Mussel Habitat Project at the NY-NJ Harbor & Estuary Program Conference. A student looks through a refractometer to determine the salinity of the Gowanus Canal. A student gets a closer look at various insect species. Students from Brooklyn Collaborative Studies HS conduct routine monitoring of wildlife living on mussel habitats they designed. Students use bug jars to safely capture and observe insects. Buzz buzz 🐝 this bee is ready for its close-up! Students from Brooklyn Collaborative Studies HS closed out the school year with a presentation of their findings from the$
