Happy World Teacher's Day 💐

I've been working in education since 2014 🫣

bell hooks said education was the "practice of freedom" and that classrooms were a radical space of possibility.

As a Sociology teacher in secondary school, now working my way up in academia, I have indeed spent my time trying to radicalise my students 😅

But the bulk of my time was spent advocating for the young people I worked with, and true Black Feminist fashion, encouraging them to see their lived experiences as just as valuable as what was in the curriculum.

A lot of people that if you are teacher, that's all you can be, and actually that's absolutely not true. Teaching has taken me into research, lecturing, consultancy, training teachers and more. It has also taken me to the House of Commons more than once.

So happy World Teacher's Day to all my fellow teachers and educators 💐🫶🏾

Yesterday, I was invited to the Psychosocial Postgraduate Conference at @birkbeckuol to deliver the opening remarks ✨️

Very full circle, as I had my masters lecturer for many years ago there and one of my current PhD Supervisors in the audience. BUT, and most importantly, I had my plus one in the audience who said I was great but that I should have been on an "actual" stage 🤣😅🙌🏾

It was also my first time getting flowers after a speaking event, come on!! 💐

Someone said to my plus one "Your mum's amazing" and maybe I am, maybe I'm not but I am amazing enough to be on an "actual" stage and that's got to count for something ❤️😅

Last week. I was NOT in the UK anymore, I was in Bar-ba-dos 🇧🇧👏🏾😅

I am grateful to have been part of the International Summer Institute at @uwicavehillcampus with those from @uwimona @uniofleicester and @university_of_alberta

Barbados was a roller coaster 🎢

From a car crash on my first day to uni (I'm fine 🙂) to being on a Plantation🙏🏾 to travelling with my two fave people 🫶🏾

I felt many feels and learnt a lot academically and about myself.

Soo much to share, but Instagram will never do such a beautiful island any justice.

Still in two minds about making the Caribbean my more permanent residence, though lol 🤔

What was really important interesting was the disconnect between the diaspora. But I'll leave that for another post, lol.

My second international conference this year ✨️🎉🙌🏾

Where to next?

2025 was a roller coaster, and I hung on for dear life!

Highs and lows, but I had a great time.

I travelled to New Orleans and Cape Verde and met some amazing people from the US and Brazil @authentikally_steph and @marianneduafe 🫶🏾

I worked like a dog, studying, researching, networked, conferenced, utilising my LinkedIn like never before.

I jobbed, and I freelanced.

I wrote reports and read reports (thank you to @blamcharity & @raceontheagenda)

I took up space in the House of Commons and connecting with a community of people doing great work.

I advocated for children in my personal and professional life.

And I trained hard with my @efittest_ fam and my boo @latifapalmer_ 👀

I soft launched @thecollectivethreaduk and spent time with my two fave people @ashleighreana and my boy.

2026 will be a hustle year (final phD year), but I'm predicting great things ✨️👌🏾👨🏿‍🎓

Earlier this week, I was invited to the House of Commons by MP Bell Ribeiro-Addy (@bell_ribeiroaddy) for the Black Women, Healing and Activist Burnout — In Conversation with Nova Reid (@novareidofficiall) event, which also coincided with International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

And the facts are still the facts, Black women ARE the Blueprint.

The conversation reminded me that as a Black woman, if I do not prioritise myself and embed care into my day to day life, I will suffer. It doesn't matter how hard ya work or how excellent you are, babyyy. The system works harder.

So whilst I consider myself an activist who is actively working, studying, freelancing, conferencing, etc. Rest is revolutionary practice in a world that absolutely loves seeing Black women labour. If I cannot advocate for myself, how can I truly show up actively for others in the community.

So if you don't hear from me, I'm sleeping until 2026 😴 lol

Will drop some gems I learnt from the event soon 👀✨️

Guys, we are in the Metro Newspaper online ✨️👌🏾

Whilst we don't celebrate Black History Month #BHM365, it is clear that this Black History Month has been very quiet and lacking energy from brands, media, etc.

This article is a node to Black women by our founder @__jamilaayesha and speaks to her PhD research. The article highlights Black women using social media to advocate for Black communities and to create counter narratives of Black love, joy, and self care, disrupting racialised and gendered stereotypes of Black women. We spotlight some Black women trailblazers from the past, such as Olive Morris and Claudia Jones, whilst also speaking to Black women and Black women-led platforms doing the work in the present such as @knowyourcaribbean
@mamas.classes
@simplysayo
@blackballaduk
@candicebrathwaite

So support and love Black women, mot just for Black History Month, but for now and forever because we are actually doing A LOT for the community 🫶🏾✨️🤷🏾‍♀️

International Women’s Day is here!

🚀There is still A LOT to do towards gender equality but in the meantime, we came up with a resource to celebrate women; people submitted businesses, platforms, artists, and more, and we've been checking and compiling them on our website: ilikenetworking.uk/iwd-resources

👉You can also add your name as a speaker for IWD on internationalwomensday.com/Speakers

Happy International Women's Day 🤎💕

Black Women, you deserve grace.
Today, and every damn day!

We were inspired by a recent post by @neffyfrofro about extending grace to one's self.

How do you extend grace to yourself?

How to you celebrate yourself, and the women you love, in international women's day?

NEW BLOG.
