The Collective Thread is a passion project stemming from my PhD research.

It's an attempt at cultivating a space and community for Black women and keeping some of the conversations from my PhD research alive.

The Collective Thread is a community, archival space, and multimedia platform grounded in Black feminist thought, centering the voices, experiences, and knowledge of Black women across generations. Through video mediaβ€”including podcasts, Instagram content, and short-form documentariesβ€”as well as educational talks, workshops, and roundtable discussions, the platform creates space for Black women to share, reflect, and build collectively.

This space is absolutely for Black women, but it is also for those who want to learn and listen, and for those who love Black women.

So get ready! It's about to be good πŸ‘ŒπŸΎπŸ’•βœ¨οΈ by @thecollectivethreaduk

We heard that October is the month of the Black girl ✨️🀎

Research is an important part of this Collective space.

We wanted to share the work of our founder @__jamilaayesha which she coproduced with @raceontheagenda and the Black girls she spoke with.

The research centres Black girls' experiences of race, racism and misogynoir and the ways in which school can be a site of violence for them.

Importantly, 84% of the Black girls did not know if they had experienced misogynoir as they were not familiar with the term. What does this tell us?

Knowledge is power!

Giving Black girls the language, and the space, to articulate their experiences is key.

Amd there are some very important organisations doing great work with Black girls, including:

@milkhoneybees who have a series of events on this month for Black girls and have also contributed important reports

@thecatalyst_collective who pair Black girls with Black women mentors and are currently looking for mentors/mentees.

@beleve_uk who work to empower young women and girls and are currently looking for mentors.

Lots of work to be done to support Black girls but lots is being done too!

Link in bio to read the report πŸ”—

A momentary drop off, but we back at it!

So what exactly is "African Feminism" and how can it be used and interpreted to speak to the lived experiences of African women and women of African descent today?

Happy World Teacher's Day πŸ’

I've been working in education since 2014 🫣

bell hooks said education was the "practice of freedom" and that classrooms were a radical space of possibility.

As a Sociology teacher in secondary school, now working my way up in academia, I have indeed spent my time trying to radicalise my students πŸ˜…

But the bulk of my time was spent advocating for the young people I worked with, and true Black Feminist fashion, encouraging them to see their lived experiences as just as valuable as what was in the curriculum.

A lot of people that if you are teacher, that's all you can be, and actually that's absolutely not true. Teaching has taken me into research, lecturing, consultancy, training teachers and more. It has also taken me to the House of Commons more than once.

So happy World Teacher's Day to all my fellow teachers and educators πŸ’πŸ«ΆπŸΎ

Yesterday, I was invited to the Psychosocial Postgraduate Conference at @birkbeckuol to deliver the opening remarks ✨️

Very full circle, as I had my masters lecturer for many years ago there and one of my current PhD Supervisors in the audience. BUT, and most importantly, I had my plus one in the audience who said I was great but that I should have been on an "actual" stage πŸ€£πŸ˜…πŸ™ŒπŸΎ

It was also my first time getting flowers after a speaking event, come on!! πŸ’

Someone said to my plus one "Your mum's amazing" and maybe I am, maybe I'm not but I am amazing enough to be on an "actual" stage and that's got to count for something β€οΈπŸ˜…

A metaphor for why mainstream Feminism will not save us 🀣

An elderly white woman refused help from me, an able-bodied Black woman who is decades younger than her, when I offered to carry her suitcase upstairs. Instead, opting for a "strong man" to come help.

No men offered to help. She had to ask a police officer passing by.

On the one hand, we can say she is old-school and believes in chivalry. On the other hand, we can say a lot more πŸ€£πŸ‘€

Office Day ✌🏾

bell hooks said that teaching is the practice of freedom, that the classroom could be a space to explore the possibilities and to transgress the boundaries of oppressive systems.

In order to do that, those of us who are educators should be actively engaged in our own learning and our intellectual and spiritual growth.

But what does that look like in practice and in institutions that police how and what we teach? What is engaged pedagogy? What does care look like when nurturing the growth of our students?

Today is the 10th World Afro Day celebration

Typed "afro," and this emoji came up 🦱 ....πŸ€£πŸ‘€

Also, no option to change the skin shade, but hey, ho!

Hair politics is real.
Beauty standards are social constructs.
Black boys can have afros and long hair.
And Afro hair is beautiful 😍

Decolnial Feminism, what is that you ask?

Decolonial Feminism asks us to explore the many ways in which colonialism, patriarchy, racism and capitalism all intersect and shape gender inequality.

We can not think about the Black woman and the gender inequalities they face without thinking about colonialism and it's ramifications.

Histories of power shape the world as we know it today, and the ongoing oppressions and inequalities.

To truly decolonise is to rethink what we know and believe to be true. To decolonise is to see the reminders of colonialism in the everyday. To think about feminism decolonially is to think, how histories of colonialism and systems of oppressions made it so not all women experience womanhood equally?

What does culture mean to you?

What do you know of African history?

Do you know what pan-Africanism is?

I came across Marcus Garvey when I was less than ten and reading the book "Marcus Garvey, hero: A first biography". Such an inportant figure.

And @Vigatour endeavours to connect us with the histories and figures through clothing.

β€œThe Pan African bomber jacket is for the Africans, the Caribbean and the people of the world. Those with skin both dark and light. Starting from the back, this garment represents the chronology of African history. The rear is intentionally black, showing that out of one place came many: flora, fauna, resources, martyrs and people. I made this to unite a diaspora which colonialism divided. We are no longer divided; myself and Vigatour will remind us all that we are but one people who have truly changed the world on many occasions.”
