What should have been.

Make no mistake, the catastrophic steelhead return
In the Columbia Basin and the closure of the Deschutes and John Day rivers are gut-wrenching. Many of us feel a little lost this fall without a piece of steelhead water to guide us.

But the loss runs much deeper than a missed season on the river. It’s a reminder of what’s at stake when wild fish disappear and rivers lose the runs that have defined them for generations.

Get involved with the organizations working to protect the rivers and fish of the Columbia Basin, so those who come after us never have to experience what should have been.

We are so excited to announce our newest initiative: a statewide effort for Oregon’s rivers, fish, and communities.

Salmon and steelhead face increasing pressure from habitat loss, warming weather, drought, and wildfire. By expanding investments in rivers, forests, wetlands, and floodplains, we can meet those challenges while creating employment opportunities for Oregonians.

📍Wild is the Future aims to double Oregon’s river and stream miles primarily for wild, self-sustaining salmon and steelhead by 2040.

Oregon’s Coastal Coho comeback shows what’s possible when we invest in healthy habitat and give wild fish the conditions they need to thrive – Wild Is the Future scales this ✨Recipe for Abundance✨ across Oregon.

For decades, NFS River Stewards, volunteers, and supporters have protected their homewaters and advanced solutions for wild fish and watersheds across the Pacific Northwest – Wild is the Future builds on that work and the accomplishments of so many others, with a bold statewide vision.

‼️It’s time for a new plan that learns from an Oregon success story, not more of the same policies that waste our tax dollars and push fish toward extinction.

Visit our new campaign hub at the 🔗 in our bio, which will bring together updates, resources, volunteer opportunities, and action alerts.

I sincerely hope everyone has taken a moment to submit their commentary on retaining the Roadless Rule.

Regardless what language or tactic is presented to support rescinding it, we can’t trust it won’t be expanded upon for greater benefit of resource extraction or other detriment to the natural ecosystem being protected.

Just because not everyone can drive up and see it does not mean it shouldn’t be protected. This is a gamble we should not be willing to take.

Once we give it away, unlikely we ever get it back and certainly not in the condition it is now.

It’s October, maybe the finest month to fly fish in the great PNW and it also signifies we have 3 glorious months of fly fishing left in 2026.

We’re back on the water, AHHHH!

First visit to the Klamath River in NorCal and what a pleasure it was.

Hosted by the two and only @galgonefishing and @daxmessett and their crew in the land of giants to seek wild steelhead with a mix of half pounders and migratory fish.

Now liberated of 4 dams, the evidence of recovery is already in plain sight. This is a healthy watershed with a ton of life that hopefully only gets better over time.

Spey curious anglers would have a blast and those training for Spey-O-Rama would enjoy ample opportunity to extend long casts as well.

This is just a peak, more to come including dates for next year…
