First developed during my residency in Kyoto, this work began through walking. I spent hours each day moving through the city, gradually becoming attentive to its architectural rhythms — shifts in scale and proportion, rooflines, thresholds, façades, material surfaces and the relationships between one structure and the next.

Many of the forms that began to recur were influenced by Kyoto’s traditional machiya houses, particularly their narrow proportions and the way they negotiate interior space, façade and street.

Each evening, I returned to the studio and made quick sketches from memory of the buildings and architectural fragments that had stayed with me. I was interested not in documenting them accurately, but in what remained once the physical building was no longer in front of me — what architecture might become after passing through movement, attention and memory.

Using graphite frottage from tatami mats, I brought a tactile record of these spaces into the drawings, connecting the visual experience of the city with the surfaces encountered beneath my feet.

When the sketchbook was full, I took it apart, separating the pages and arranging them across my studio floor. Gradually, they began to assume the form of a window I passed almost daily on my walk home — an ordinary but familiar landmark around which I had repeatedly oriented myself. Without consciously intending it, its architecture had entered the work through repetition.

I taped the pages together into a fragile, unresolved memory structure for my Kyoto exhibition, leaving its folds, joins and accumulated marks visible. Now in Ireland, the work has entered another phase: carefully scanned and reconstituted as a single print, carrying these traces forward into a new form.

Stairways and nooks carry so much daily life—the rushing between rooms, the quiet morning steps, the evening wind-down, the changing light. Having this piece live right here in spaces and homes like this feels special: a gentle companion on the journey up and down, offering a fleeting moment of peace, presence and wonder every time you walk by. 🤍

Art really has an incredible way of turning a home into a sanctuary. ✨

Details of Grafted, 2026 — a new limited-edition print made in collaboration with @thecopperhse.

Using their Cruse Scanner, we were able to capture some of the delicious details and surface qualities of my raw bronze and Jesmonite sculpture edition.

The quality of the scan holds onto so much of the sculpture’s three-dimensionality — its texture, depth and weight — that the printed image almost takes on a trompe l’œil quality.

I’m so pleased with how this new edition has turned out ✨ Both the print and sculpture are now available through my online shop at sophiegough.com.
