I will be honest…. This has been a long time coming. Closing my flagship restaurant, and then opening an exciting new one (all the while working full time) was definitely not on my 2026 bingo card. Having a rare Saturday off in the midst of all of this, the husby and I decided to treat ourselves for a change. We potted on down to @hiraethkitchen to see what all the fuss was about, and omg… we were not disappointed. We opted for the full 5 course meal with wine pairing. It is clear that an enormous amount of care and attention went into the service, the food and the pairing. I got tearful during the pork dish which should tell you everything you need to know. I loved loved loved that it supported local Welsh wines like @thedellvineyard It was just the reboot that we needed. Thank you to the team at Hiraeth. ❤️ I am going to let the photos do the talking. Menu at the end! #winetime #cardiff #foodie #foodandwine #supportlocal

Last night 165 members of the Abergavenny community, gathered in the Victorian market hall. The event was called One Big Table, an event put on by a bunch of local folk who all volunteered their time, skills and love to the community. It was indeed, one Big Table!

There was live music, bar with local artisan drinks, arts and crafts at the table, families, friends and food! So much of the incredible ingredients and props were donated by local businesses. It was an absolute pleasure to feed the community in this way. The air miles on the menu was virtually nill, the local produce so good, that I wanted to let it shine without overcomplicating it.

Nothing makes me happier than seeing people round a table together, sharing food, pouring drinks and laughing. Community, family, friends, strangers ❤️ Kids running around, elderly doing crafts, strangers passing plates. That’s what it’s all about.

I didn’t get a chance to get any pictures of the food on the night, but I cooked the same menu at home so we could enjoy it as a family.

Placemat shows the businesses that contributed in some way, but doesn’t show the long list of amazing volunteers who worked so hard, meetings, planning, WhatsApp groups and phone calls. It could not have happened without the immense efforts of all the volunteers and donations from local businesses.

Love this town and love what community can do ❤️

Wine labels - less talked about than the wine itself, the region or the winery. But some are worthy of their own story.

I love these labels from The Dell Vineyard in Wales @thedellvineyard
They depict local Welsh folklore such as

𝗬𝗿 𝗔𝗳𝗮𝗻𝗰 - (“eer-avank “) a mythical Welsh creature that’s half crocodile, half beaver … but in reality is a fresh, herbal Solaris.
𝗢𝗹𝘄𝗲𝗻 - the Welsh Sun god - a barrel fermented Solaris (“Sun” in Latin)
𝗬 𝗚𝘄𝘆𝗹𝗹𝗴𝗶 - the red eyed monster dog that appears at night - a creature almost as terrifying as my attempts to pronounce its name! Inside; a tasty Pinot Noir.

Lovely folk. Lovely wines. Lovely labels.

Wine GB Trade Tasting

The big @winegb tasting always coincides with my birthday, so I headed down with my good friend @chih87 to see what the UK currently has to offer. The following are just my main highlights:

The biggest & best surprise of the day was @vagabondwines . The entire range was just so juicy and joyous. @joluqu ‘s Bacchus is by far the best I’ve ever tasted - capturing all the fresh green fruit, pretty aromatics & brightness that all too often fades with this tricky variety. A big fan of their style.

Speaking of style, I was also taken by how much I love @blackchalkwine ‘s entire range. All of @jacob_leadley & @zoedriver1992 ‘s wines are very confident in how they balance their acidity against the fruit. Everything was delicious, but Hide - a single vineyard release - took my top spot. A producer I’d happily stock up on.

@roebuckestates are another producer I’ve always loved. The new 2019 Blanc de Blancs blew me away with Roebuck’s recognisable intensity. There were a lot of sparklings that promised a lot on the nose, but didn’t follow through on the palate, but this wasn’t one of them.

@westwellwines are a producer I haven’t tasted properly in a few years. I remember being a bit selective about what I liked last time, but at this tasting I loved everything. The Ortegas were aromatic and clean, whilst the sparkling - especially the Pet Nat - had an impressively generous palate. Delicious, and such a lovely team.

@fergelias from @balfourwinery really surprised me with this Winemaker’s Chardonnay. A really characterful, crisp, sour citrus alongside a masterful application of Malo. A classy & characterful wine - lovely.

After a pretty disappointing day with rosés, @drink.folc stepped up to the mark to turn things around. Very classy and very well executed.

@denbies_wine_estate took responsibility for representing dessert wines. This Ortega was enticingly aromatic and very well balanced. Scrumptious.

Continued in the comments.

Grape harvesting, lunch and a glass of wine. Not a bad way to spend a morning!

I joined the harvest at @thedellvineyard, helping harvest Solaris grapes, and finished with a glass of Y Lleidr, one of my favourite Welsh wines.

If you fancy getting involved, vineyards are often looking for extra hands during harvest. Keep an eye out for the call-outs!

The bank holiday calls for a good bottle. Here are four British rosés to open this weekend.

Bolney Lychgate Rosé 2023 (£16) Pale, fresh and elegantly summery from one of England’s oldest vineyards in West Sussex. Stone fruit, grapefruit and crisp acidity. Available at Waitrose.

Burn Valley Marsh Rosé 2024 A family vineyard four miles from the North Norfolk coast. Fruity, fresh and full of coastal character. Available direct from the vineyard.

The Dell Y Lleidr 2025 (£22) Named after the blackbirds who raided the very first harvest. A fresh, fruit-forward Welsh rosé from Raglan, Monmouthshire and winner of Best Still Rosé at the Welsh Wine Awards 2025.

Balfour Nannette’s Rosé (around £20) One of England’s most celebrated still rosés from Hush Heath Estate in Kent. Pale, fresh and bursting with summer fruit.

Four wines. Four stories. All from closer to home than you might think.
