Pyracantha at the end of our rows, not roses!

Ever wondered why roses are traditionally planted at the end of vineyard rows? They were used as an early warning system for diseases such as powdery mildew, as symptoms can sometimes appear on roses before the vines. Today, growers have more sophisticated ways of monitoring vineyard health, so roses aren’t quite the essential early-warning system they once were.

We’ve opted for Pyracantha (firethorn) instead! Not only does it look stunning at this time of year, but it could also help protect our precious grapes.

Here’s the clever bit: pyracantha berries attract the pesky Spotted Wing Drosophila (SWD), a fruit fly that can damage ripening grapes and contribute to sour rot. Research suggests that although these flies are attracted to pyracantha berries and lay their eggs there, the fruit is a poor environment for their offspring to develop.

In other words, pyracantha could act as a dead-end host, potentially helping to divert these unwanted visitors away from our grapes!

Pretty to look at and potentially practical, too! by @thedellvineyard

A gorgeous time of year to wander around the vines.

The Solaris leaves are now starting to turn yellow and fall, then the Pinot will follow in a few weeks. We’re looking forward to the dramatic display of red before they retire for the winter! by @thedellvineyard

Souvignier Gris mini harvest!

This was meant to be our first harvest of Souvignier Gris but the frosts in the spring changed all that!

We never had enough to make wine so we’ve decided to collaborate with our friends from @sobremesa.drinks and @silvercircledistillery

It’s all a bit of an experiment at the moment but keep your eyes peeled to see what comes next! The main thing is nothing will get wasted and it’s a great way for three local businesses to work together by @thedellvineyard

A huge thank you to everyone who stopped by our stand, tasted, chatted, bought a bottle (or two!) and supported us. It genuinely means the world ❤️

Harvest might be finished, but things haven’t stopped in the vineyard just yet.

A small quantity of our Souvignier Gris is still hanging on the vines. It wasn’t quite ready for harvest, so we’re leaving it to ripen a little longer before it becomes part of something rather special with @silvercircledistillery. Watch this space. Poppy approves, and she reckons they’re nearly there!

We’ve also been green harvesting the last of the unripe bunches, along with the odd one that escaped our attention during harvest. It helps tidy up the vines, reduce the risk of mildew and allows the vines to start shutting down for winter, putting their remaining energy into preparing for next year.

Meanwhile, the bar has been packed away ready for its return in spring, and the bird scarers have finally done their job and can come down for another year.
