La Plaza, Palm Springs, is perhaps the first modern-form shopping center in California, opening in 1936. Julia Carnell, National Cash Register Company heiress, brought the company architect Harry J. Williams to design the complex, giving the opportunity to satisfy the shopping needs of visitors. An 850 seat theatre almost matched the town’s total population. And there was an auto dealership, a gas station, and an underground garage, in addition to apartments above the shops for sales clerks. The charming scale and the nod to vernacular regional architecture make it a terrific model for automobile-centered shopping centers today. Historic images from Palm Springs Historical Society.

Fans of Mid-Century architecture will be impressed by this remarkable 1962 house by E. Fay Jones in Memphis, Tennessee that I visited on Saturday. Jones trained under Frank Lloyd Wright and employed a studio of architects in Fayetteville, Arkansas starting in the early 1960s. In 1966, he became the first chair of the architecture department at the University of Arkansas and then the first dean of the new School of Architecture in 1974. Due to privacy reasons, I am not posting some of the more evocative photos, but the house is for sale. Note the hanging light fixtures, cabinetry, and bathroom towel bars (and paper holders). Search 5715 Sycamore Grove. It’s potentially fabulous!

Illustrator Pierre Brissaud’s cover for the July, 1928 for House & Garden magazine. Although the house in the background is sometimes identified today as “Hedgerow”, the residence of architect Pleasants Pennington in Locust Valley, Long Island, the two houses are decidedly different, though both are full of charm for a dwelling of relatively small scale.

It is heartening to drive by an old project and see it continued to be loved. The original makeover of a bland, neglected 1940s house was done about 15 years ago with @hectorsamada and I have returned twice for further improvements and an addition for a subsequent owner.

The shopfront from 3, quai de Bourbon, Ile Saint-Louis, Paris, between 1775-77 (with later replacements) is displayed in the Wrightsman Galleries of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, NYC, as a gift from J. Pierpont Morgan, 1920. As seen in the Chester Price rendering from House & Garden magazine, 1927, it had been added to a seventeenth century building, a rare survivor of retail architecture of the Louis XVI period. By the time it was dismantled during World War I, the paint had worn away to expose the bare oak so the natural finish was retained in the restoration for the museum in keeping with the tastes of the time.

Can anyone give me a clue to the identity of the artist of this painting? The signature shown in the second image appears to be Vittar or Vittas, but nothing could be found by a general search online. The frame appears to me to be Spanish, but I am not an authority on such. I love it, but more information would be appreciated.

Emilio Terry’s drawing, ink on paper, inscribed “Rochecotte” and dated “9 mai 1935”, sold at auction, Sotheby’s Paris, 28 May 2019. The French architect, artist, furniture designer, and decorator with his “Louis XVIII Style” continues to influence and provide inspiration.

A good uplight is seldom fully appreciated by design professionals who tend to instead prefer downlights. But light bounced off the ceiling is always better in a quality residential setting as illustrated by this room created for Drue Heinz by the legendary decorator Renzo Mongiardino. The space adjacent to the London mews house that had been an auto showroom was transformed into a ballroom-like reception room with murals inspired by the Villa Falconieri in Rome. The green painted and parcel gilt lighting standards designed Mongiardino circa 1986 are among the lots from Mrs. Heinz’s estate offered by Christie’s London next month.

“Tracking the Quarry” is one in a series of eight panels painted by Rex Whistler for the staircase hall at 36 Hill Street, Mayfair, London, 1936. According to the 2012 exhibition at Colefax & Fowler, The Unseen Rex Whistler, the artist referred to the homeowner Mrs. Porcelli as “the old cat.” 220 x 170 cm.
