In 1970s Memphis, in my teenage realm, there was nothing more chic than a portrait by Mary Sims. An exhibition of her work including the earlier prints and the later florals has just closed @dixonmemphis.

In my ideal world, a bathroom is a room that happens to have plumbing fixtures. The point is illustrated in this sketch by my former employer and mentor Albert Hadley. His proposal is to add Country House glamour to the suburban Nashville (Belle Meade) mansion, Cheekwood. Built 1929-32 for Mabel and Leslie Cheek, who had made a fortune developing Maxwell House coffee. The house and gardens were designed by landscape architect Bryant Fleming. Today, the much appreciated estate is open to the public.

The Prague apartment of Geraldine Mucha, daughter-in-law of Czech Art Nouveau era artist Alphonse Mucha. A lithograph of a poster he designed for a fair in his hometown Ivancice hangs over the mantel.

I was fortunate to visit Chatsworth twice with my Attingham class in 1991. The second time was a full day tour with the charming Dutchess of Devonshire, Deborah Cavendish, the last of the six Mitford sisters. It was a particularly delightful treat to visit the private parts, even her bedroom, of this Stately Home.

The late Giorgio Armani's dining room in his house in the Brera neighborhood of Milan was used daily. The large painting came from an old cinema in his hometown of Piacenza. Other pieces show the designer's love of the Far East, Art Deco, and Modern Art. Photo by Gionata Xerra for The World of Interiors, December 2012.

Paintings like this, rich in detail, are excellent to use as reference in the study of historic interiors. "The Aristocrat's Breakfast", 1850, Pavel Fedotov (1815-1852).
