I’ve enjoyed every bit of MJ’s documentary “The Last Dance”. It was sad to see him walk away from the game He loved while still playing at a high level. How does this pertain to me? In no way am I comparing myself to MJ. I’m not walking away from barbering just yet but this is “The Last Dance” per se in barbering for me in So Cal. It’s been just over seven years since I arrived in So Cal and barbering surrounded me with people that have impacted me and have given me everlasting life lessons. For now, my time here in SoCal is complete. It was a bittersweet family decision that my wife and I had to make. This makes more sense for our next chapter in life. We will be moving back to NorCal at the end of this month. Barbering will continue for me up there. Unfortunately, in the barber world you can’t always take your business with you completely. Not your co-workers nor your clientele. I just wanted to take the time to thank everyone who has been part of this journey. I’ve been completely humbled by the opportunity I received to have been served and to serve each and every one of you in one way or another. I usually always have a million things running through my mind at all times. Usually I’m able to channel my thoughts, and focus on the task at hand until that task is done.
-
But every now and then I have moments, usually at the end of a long day, where my thoughts overwhelm me. My body goes into a state of numbness. I still have control of my body, but I don’t know what to do with myself. I don’t want to do anything, but I don’t want to just lay down either. It’s like I’m just suspended in time, and wish that world would just pause itself around me so that I can have a moment to collect myself.

Recently I had probably the worst case of these episodes that I’ve ever had. It almost drove me to the point of crying. Luckily I happened to be talking to somebody close to me that goes through the same thing, who was able to talk me through it. It was reassuring just to know that Im not the only one who goes through this. She basically said that even though my mind constantly wants to keep going and start thinking about the next task, this was my body’s way of forcing me to stop and take a breather.

It was a wake up call for me to start taking better care of myself. I devote so much of myself to my career, but I have to remember that I am not a machine. I have limitations, and I have to take better care of myself mentally and physically. The reason I bring this up is because hopefully this story will help somebody else who may experience this same thing. And if so, may it be a reminder for that person that our health will not last forever, and we can’t take it for granted. I also urge everybody to not feel like you must shoulder the load all of the time. There’s nothing wrong with needing help, and reaching out to others for it.
