„If I do not return“ - Basel Uraufführung 11.10.26

New opera by Hania Rani

'If I do not return' is the first opera by @haniarani and will receive its world premiere on October 11 in Basel. Soprano @alfheidurerla and mezzo-soprano @thee.dangelo portray two versions of the opera’s sole protagonist. Rani will perform at the piano alongside Kammerorchester Basel and @neophyt.vokalensemble. The opera was commissioned by @theaterbasel.

With a libretto based on texts by John Dowland, the opera is loosely inspired by Stanisław Lem’s philosophical science-fiction novel “Solaris”. Rani explores the nature of time through multiple timelines unfolding simultaneously, addressing extinction, the recurrence of history, and our personal relationship to the past.

You know how sometimes a show is so good you have to go back. Then go back four years later. And go back again. And again?
Richard Jones' Alcina is truly special, I could have gone to all performances and it would have felt fresh every single time.

I promise I'll stop endlessly posting about it now....maybe 😈

I'll miss the fringe art!

Trying to be the Closest Audience Member To The Stage™️

Massive shoutout to the dancers who are all phenomenal. They all had distinct personalities and the amount they were able to communicate with only their movement, you forgot that they were wearing masks preventing them from having facial expressions!

Intentional Community™️ Leader Atlante is such a good idea, and @edwardgrint played him perfectly! Very good at menacingly pointing at people 🫵

Oronte is our favourite shit-stirrer and I can't imagine anyone but @ru.the.day playing him! And we love seeing a gamer singer 🎮

My camera betrayed me for this photo and overexposed @marycbevan but my god was she good at Morgana, who is easily the most fun character in the opera!

My god, @bethtaylormezzo 's voice??? What a Bradamante, incredible acting too, with the funniest expressions!

Someone told @thee.dangelo "You're gonna sing this aria with incredibly long phrases that don't let you breathe ever, and when you're not singing you're gonna be running across the stage with a plate of oysters.", and she went "No problem 😎"

The camera betrayed me again but #lisetteoropesa seemed to be having the time of her life! This is an Alcina you really wanna root for, and my god did she sound incredible 🎵

So Alcina was pretty good I guess.

Gonna miss this production and this cast!

Did I mention that they are all the kindest most wonderful humans?

One of the biggest highlights of this was taking my still-relatively-new-to-opera friends (including @noodlevalley ) along and witnessing them enjoy the magic as much as I did ❤️❤️

A magnificent final performance in this run of Alcina at the Royal Opera House. My second time seeing the peerless @thee.dangelo doing a Handel castrato!
