Mezzo-soprano Emily D'Angelo sings Future Hari in “If I do not return" by Hania Rani. Inspired by the philosophical sci-fi novel "Solaris" by Stanisław Lem, with a libretto composed of text from the songs of John Dowland, “If I do not return" is directed by a creative team of four artists: Álfheiður Erla Guðmundsdóttir, Emily D'Angelo, Theresa Baumgartner, and Hania Rani.

The opera ‘If I do not return’ has its world premiere today at Elisabethenkirche in Basel. A newly composed piece by Hania Rani inspired by the philosophical sci-fi novel ‘Solaris’ by Stanislaw Lem, to a libretto based on renaissance texts of John Dowland. Directed by a collective team of four artists: Alfheidur Gudmundsdottir, Emily D’Angelo, Theresa Baumgartner and Hania Rani; with set and costumes designed by Theresa Baumgartner. Performed by Alfheidur Gudmundsdottir as Past Hari and Emily D’Angelo as Future Hari, Neophyt Vokalensemble and Kammerorchester Basel.

The performances will take place on the 11, 13, 15, 17 and 19th of October at Elisabethenkirche.

The opera is commissioned and produced by Theater Basel.

Eine futuristische Oper: Der sakrale Raum verwandelt sich in eine Klanglandschaft, die die Zeit aufhebt und eine endlose Schleife zwischen der elisabethanischen Vergangenheit und einer fernen Zukunft schafft.

Pianistin und Komponistin @haniarani lässt Texte aus Renaissance-Liedern von John Dowland in ihrer zeitgenössischen Klangsprache wiederaufleben. Zusammen mit den international bekannten Sängerinnen @thee.dangelo und @alfheidurerla und mit dem Bühnen- und Kostümdesign von @theres_a_baumgartner konzipiert Rani eine mystische, installative Konzertperformance in der Elisabethenkirche.

Von den Anfängen bis zur Bühne: Wir haben das Team besucht und mit ihnen über die Komposition, den Prozess und die Zusammenarbeit gesprochen und ein Blick in die Proben geworfen.

The glittering enchantress returns ✨

Handel’s Alcina opens on our Main Stage tonight, with Lisette Oropesa as the sorceress who lures lovers to her island, only to transform them into animals when she tires of them.

Richard Jones’s Olivier Award-winning production conjures a world of magic and glamour, but Alcina’s powers cannot protect her from heartbreak. As her illusions begin to fall away, Handel’s music reveals the woman behind the enchantress.

Soprano Hanna-Elisabeth Müller and mezzo-soprano Emily D’Angelo appeared in Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro with the Boston Symphony Orchestra at Tanglewood.

Conducted by Andris Nelsons and directed by James Darrah, the semi-staged performance featured Hanna-Elisabeth Müller as the Countess and Emily D’Angelo as Cherubino, alongside Nikola Hillebrand as Susanna, Michael Sumuel as Figaro, and Joshua Hopkins as Count Almaviva.

The performance took place on August 1, 2026, at the Koussevitzky Music Shed.

IF I DO NOT RETURN - Opera
Theater Basel, October 11-19 2026

Established and set into motion by three singular voices of the contemporary music : composer - Hania Rani and singers: Álfheiður Erla Guðmundsdóttir, and Emily D’Angelo, the opera ‘If I do not return’ combines texts from songs of John Dowland, philosophical science-fiction novel Solaris by Stanisław Lem, and newly composed music by Hania Rani. With a contribution of Theresa Baumgartner, one of the most exciting set and light designers of her generation, the premiere of the piece will take place on October 11, 2026 at the Offene Kirche Elisabethen in Basel, Switzerland as part of the Theater Basel 2026/27 programme. Scored for two solo voices: soprano and mezzo-soprano, eight piece choir and instrumental ensemble, ‘If I do not return’ was specifically composed for the cathedral acoustics using its natural resonance as one of the defining elements of the composition, drawing inspiration from a wide variety of sources: from gregorian chant to the first examples of polyphony, as well as some of the most singular voices in contemporary music such as Feldman, Pärt and Saariaho. The composition seems to come to life: a vast, dark, dissonant, muted entity, it brings together the archaic language of the Renaissance and the daring visions of the future to reconnect and recalibrate our sense of being in the present moment of history.
