I appreciate the student journalists at my alma mater, @americanuniversity, for covering Maryland’s data center debate and my successful effort to pause new data center development.

It’s an important conversation about protecting our environment, keeping utility costs affordable, and ensuring communities have a voice in Maryland’s future.

As she steps into the Editor-in-Chief role at The Eagle—leading AU’s student newspaper into its 101st year—Gabrielle McNamee, SOC-SPA ’27, reflected on her steady personal growth across both the newsroom and the classroom.

A double major in journalism and justice, law & criminology, McNamee has built her AU experience around reporting, leadership, and an interest in how storytelling and systems of justice intersect. But what drew her here in the first place?

“At one of my first tours of American University, I attended an informational session about the School of Communication. I soaked up every tidbit of information I could, and at one point, I heard professor Jane Hall speak about the community that existed just within McKinley’s walls. In those moments, I remember thinking I was exactly where I was supposed to be — surrounded by writers and creatives that centered humanity in their work.”

When asked how journalism & justice intersect, double major student in Journalism & Justice, Law & Criminology Gabrielle McNamee said, "Neither can exist w/out the other, yet both are necessary in a functioning, democratic society." “Across the two years she has worked at the American University library, Sydney Henry has compiled a notebook of her experiences. The pages chronicle what she says is a years-long pattern of intimidation and belittlement by supervisors.

Henry said she was left out of meetings and was told she was lucky her employers gave her a chance despite her youth. Henry, 23, is the library’s communication and event coordinator.

When she was assigned work beyond her paygrade and started seeking a raise, Henry met with University Librarian Jeehyun Davis, member of the Dean’s Council and Henry’s top supervisor. Davis told her she likely wouldn’t do anything going through the Staff Union or human resources, Henry said.

Henry, a unionized employee, had already filed a pay grievance through AU’s Staff Union in February 2025. When her supervisors learned of this, the bullying increased, Henry said.

Henry is not the only library employee to say she’s faced mistreatment from Davis specifically, nor is she the only one to report it with no actionable success. Davis declined to sit for an interview but said in an emailed statement she “cannot comment on individual personnel matters” and that she takes “any concerns about workplace culture seriously and support[s] the university’s established processes for reviewing and addressing them.”“
