Happy Alopecia Awareness Month! 🥚👨🏽‍🦲👩🏼‍🦲

If you don’t know what alopecia is, essentially it’s an autoimmune condition that can cause partial or total hair loss due to the body attacking hair follicles. This can show up as a tiny patch of hair that’s missing, which can sometimes be easy to hide, or it can show up like ME—with no hair anywhere at all on my body which is called alopecia universalis. So I’m a fully-fledged EGGVENGER🥚🦸🏽

There are other forms of alopecia, too! To give you a small, easy-to-understand guide:

Alopecia Areata: Small round patches of hair that come off anywhere on the body

Androgenetic Alopecia: AKA male-pattern or female-pattern baldness, which can show up as a receding hairline in men or gradual widening of the hair part and thinning across the top of the head in women

Telogen Effluvium: A temporary shedding usually due to the onset of stress, illness, or hormonal shifts

Traction Alopecia: Hair loss caused by lots of tight hair pulling or tight hairstyles (like braids)

Scarring (Cicatricial) Alopecia: Rare, inflammatory conditions that destroy hair follicles and replace them with scar tissue. Hair loss happens, accompanied by redness, itching, scaling, or burning of the scalp.

Someone you know may have alopecia, and you may have no idea! It’s more common that you might think. Approximately 80 MILLION people in the USA ALONE are impacted by alopecia in some form!

Regardless, my main message always is that hair does not define your worth! What alopecia has helped me and many others to do is shift our focus inward and realize that true beauty and worth comes from within, and that’s an important lesson for anyone to learn! Know you’re beautiful as you are, your uniqueness is something to be celebrated, and though they can take away your hair, they can NEVER take away WHO YOU ARE! 🤟❤️

As someone that’s had alopecia since age 2, I cannot emphasize enough how meaningful it is to spend a whole weekend with other people who understand that experience first hand 🥰

It’s always such an honor getting to teach alopecia makeup techniques at @naaf_alopecia and spend time with so many incredible people who feel like instant family 💞

As someone who wears wigs everyday, and generally won’t even walk from my room to the bathroom without my wig on (despite being close with my roommates!) it’s always incredible to spend the entire weekend without wig and not even think twice about it. Even though I actually love how I look sans wig, I’m not always comfortable with the stares and questions it often garners. Someone at the conference said coming to NAAF almost feels like putting on your armor to go back into the world to be able to handle those experiences with confidence as we go back into our normal lives. And I will say I did not put a wig back on to make my way to the airport and fly home ✨

Every year, I get a little emotional about how life changing the alopecia conference would have been for me had I been going from a young age, but now I never want to miss another one as long as I can help it 💜

I love all these beautiful humans so much and have made so many lifelong connections. If you have alopecia, whether you’re new to the experience, or already feel like you’ve “conquered” it, I cannot recommend it enough 🥰

Another amazing year at @naaf_alopecia conference!➡️

Alopecia can suck sometimes, but there is never a moment during this conference that it feels that way. For a weekend, we get to curate a space where bald is the norm and it is such a nice mental break!

It’s hard to believe the autoimmune disease that caused one of the loneliest chapters of my life is the same one that has given me all of these beautiful friendships and so much more.

I often say, even 11 years of bald gal life in, there’s a tiny piece of me that misses my hair every single day. Today I had a realization that at the @naaf_alopecia conference, that piece of me disappears completely. That omnipresent teeny grief bugger goes on vacation while I live my best life surrounded by the best humans who truly get it. 💙

Thank you NAAF for another beautiful weekend. Can’t wait to see you all again next year! Meet ya on the dance floor!👩🏽‍🦲🫶🪩

Iconic bald photos from an iconic bald weekend at @naaf_alopecia with so many amazing alopecian friends!

It was also amazing to get to speak on two panels to talk all about love and self-acceptance with alopecia. We truly do have an advanced form of the immaculate gift of empathy, and we would be wise to use it to continue to spread love to the world around us. Alopecia can be the greatest gift you can ever receive, if you choose to see it. Looking forward to seeing all my friends again next year!

Also—the soul connection is real. The most authentic way to meet someone is a on the level of who they truly are, and that is entirely independent of how they look. The most human of us desire connection at this level. Always remember this, choose to be real and see the soul, and you’ll always find your people, inside and outside of the alopecia community.
