~merkado kultura #3~

yet again, my favorite market of the year came back and only got better! i cant even remember what pukshiet was before @merkadokultura entered my life and i dont want to remember. my appreciation for the fil-am community only grows stronger with each new merkado installment and i hope this is true for my fellow vendors, whom i feel become part of my family. and to the attendees who show up to support us vendors, i am so grateful to be able to share my story and craft with yall :,) already starting the countdown for year 4 of merkado kultura!!

I took my “Handmade to Trade” series to the next level for this past weekend’s @merkadokultura at the @mingeimuseum! 🇵🇭🤝

As a food artist, I wanted to use what I do best to celebrate my fellow Filipino small businesses! I reached out to all the food vendors and asked them to pick something from their menu they’d love to see turned into a mini.

Many of these vendors are friends I’ve vended alongside countless times, while others are new friends I got to know through this collaboration.

But this was about more than just making minis. As small business owners, we pour so much time, love, and hard work into what we create. I wanted to give each vendor a little keepsake to remind them of everything they’ve built and how far they’ve come.

And with Filipino American History Month upon us, this felt even more meaningful. Every artist, maker, and small business at Merkado Kultura is making their own Filipino American history. That’s the beauty of kapwa, recognizing our shared connection and celebrating each other’s journeys as we build something of our own. ❤️🇵🇭

I even made a menu board featuring all the minis so guests could get a little preview of what our food vendors had to offer!

And don’t worry, I made fun videos with everyone too! 🎥 I’ll be sharing those throughout the month, so stay tuned!

Huge thanks to all the vendors who took part and everyone who continues to support Filipino small businesses. Here’s to growing together and making more history! 🇵🇭

Jacob Chen wants to change how San Diegans snack, starting with mochi. His company, Made for MeiMei, is bringing the traditional rice-based treat back to its roots—and doing some good along the way.

American-style mochi tends to be sweet and often comes as mochi ice cream. But Chen sweetens his mochi with monk fruit and uses organic pumpkin seed protein and chicory root fiber to create what he calls “the first better-for-you mochi” with flavors like ube, matcha, red bean, black sesame, peanut butter and jelly, and chocolate hazelnut.

Recent @made_for_meimei collaborations include a mochi-wrapped gelato with An’s Dry Cleaning, strawberry daifuku cream puff with Mon Chourie, and a funfetti chantilly cream dip mochi with The Clovery.

There’s a bigger mission, too. Inspired by his work in rehabilitation clinics and volunteering at San Quentin, Chen donates portions of proceeds to organizations like Second Chance San Diego, Immigrant Defenders Law Center, and Border Angels.

Made for MeiMei products are available online and locally at Easy Does It Cafe and Bodega Market, with more retail expansion in the works.
