At the 2026 International Courthouse Dogs® Conference, Katie Gray, President of The Empowered Heart® Foundation, will open Day 2 with an important conversation about handler wellness: The Importance of Self-Awareness in the Face of Trauma Secondary traumatic stress is real and common among professionals who work closely with survivors, witnesses, and victims. Katie will explore how it can show up for facility dog handlers, how to recognize it in ourselves and our colleagues, and strategies for making this work sustainable over the long arc of a career. As an author, counselor, speaker, and creator of The Empowered Heart method, Katie has dedicated her work to helping people navigate difficult experiences through compassion, consciousness, and self-awareness. This isn't a session about simply pushing through. In today’s story, we hear about a mystical plant medicine journey, self-love, and the importance of caring for your Self. • • • One thing I’ve learned (been learning): it’s important to witness the suffering of the World—to feel it, to be with it—without becoming it. Don’t mistakingly assume that by attuning to it and joining the suffering, you’re heroically easing it. 2 sufferers don’t make a healed. There’s more to say and that’s why I made this video. To share with you a tender, vulnerable and honest story of where and how I learned this tender insight. Note: with the expansion of @theempoweredheart I realize how important it is to make videos and promote the work. Sometimes, it’s deflating and uninspiring to just sit and speak to the camera. Instead, I really want to just have a real conversation with you. I love telling and hearing stories so maybe this is a way to keep connecting and honoring what feels authentic in my heart.
