Solo motherhood by choice is one of the quietest social revolutions of our generation.

For centuries, women were told they had to choose between motherhood and autonomy.

Today, more women are deciding they don’t.

In Australia, single women are one of the fastest-growing patient groups accessing fertility treatment, and at some fertility clinics they now represent more than half of patients.

This isn’t a story about women and romantic relationships.

It’s a story about women recognising that motherhood doesn’t have to depend on finding the “right” partner at the “right” time.

Decades of research consistently show that children raised by solo mothers by choice are thriving.

Studies have found no differences in children’s psychological adjustment compared with children raised in heterosexual two-parent families. Children’s outcomes are shaped far more by the quality of their relationships with caregivers than by the number, gender or relationship status of their parents.

Solo motherhood by choice isn’t of the decline of “the family”.

It’s part of the ongoing evolution of family and kinship systems.

For many women, advances in reproductive medicine have created possibilities that simply didn’t exist for previous generations. Motherhood is no longer tied to marriage or partnership in the way it once was, giving women greater autonomy over if, when and how they become parents.

The research is clear.

The challenges faced by solo mother by choice families don’t come from within the family (intrafamial)—they come from outside it.

Societal attitudes, stigma, and a social environment built around a narrow heteronormative and bioessentialist definition of what a family should look like.

The quality of family relationships matters far more for children’s wellbeing than family structure.

We can improve family wellbeing for diverse families by addressing the external factors that undermine health and wellbeing.

Longitudinal studies are one of the strongest forms of research we have. They follow families over many years—sometimes from infancy through to adulthood—allowing researchers to understand how children develop across different stages of life.

What do they consistently show?

Children raised in mother-headed families—including solo mothers by choice and lesbian mothers—have outcomes that are equal to and even better than those of children raised in mother-father families.

These findings challenge the long-held assumption that children need both a mother and a father, or that heterosexual two-parent families are inherently better for children’s development. The evidence simply doesn’t support that claim.

One reason may be that these families are created intentionally. Becoming a solo mother by choice or a lesbian mother through assisted conception with donated gametes typically involves years of planning, significant emotional and financial investment, and a deeply considered decision to become a parent.

Decades of research point to the same conclusion: family structure is a poor predictor of child wellbeing.

The quality of relationships within the family is what matters most.

Alongside our incredible partners @mujerxsrising & @freefromdotorg, we co-hosted a day-long pre-conference at #WomenDeliver26, convening 300+ advocates to continue our ongoing conversation on Resourcing a Global Movement. A huge thank you to our regional hosts @preventgbv and @theequalityinstitute for holding us with such grace on the beautiful unceded lands of Naarm and anchoring us in the Oceanic Pacific context.

We're excited to continue building on this work. In a moment where rights are being challenged and stripped across the globe, this gathering reminded us that our movements are necessary, interconnected, and unstoppable — and we're still carrying the energy from that room.

wrote a piece for the Equality Institute’s (@theequalityinstitute) Folding Chair Journal on the unstable politics of visibility in cases of gendered violence — where exposure circulates faster than care, and where being seen does not necessarily mean being held, or protected.

the text moves through the gap between what is made visible and what is structurally ignored: how institutions, media, and collective discourse often turn harm into narrative, while leaving the material conditions of repair underdeveloped or absent.

This biryani looks generous, but the system is not. They hand you a plate of biryani at election time but don’t tell you what’s layered inside it. This is what political generosity looks like. Temporary relief over permanent inequality.

Education, which should be treated as a national emergency, is the first to be disrupted when costs rise. What continues and what stops reveals what truly matters.
