Intersectionality has become a buzz word in workplace conversations, but turning it into real change is where many organisations get stuck.

What does intersectional gender equality actually look like in the workplace?

To find out, join our free webinar with EQI Founder Dr Emma Fulu (@dremmafulu) and DEI Strategist and Educator Khayshie Tilak Ramesh (@khayshie), bringing together global evidence and lived experience to explore what it actually takes to create a culture where every person can thrive.

Emma and Khayshie will unpack why a one-size-fits-all approach to gender equality leaves so many people behind, and how stronger teams and better decisions result when inclusion is built into everyday systems rather than one-off initiatives.

Perfect for P&C and People Leaders keen to take the conversation further, you'll leave this session with practical steps you can put into action straight away.

As organisations who are committed to social justice, do we always ‘walk the talk’?

What are some of the unequal power dynamics which play out in our workplaces?

What are some practical steps we can all take to foster more equitable and inclusive workplaces?

These are some of the questions we explored at Sexual Violence Research Initiative (SVRI) Forum 2026 in Bangkok, Thailand last week.

Co-hosted by MenEngage Alliance, Samya Development Resources Pvt. Ltd. and Equality Institute, our participant-driven event 'Walking the Talk: Creating Gender Transformative Workspaces,' focused on the critical gap between our externally-facing commitments to equality, inclusion, and justice, and our internally-facing workplace cultures, systems, and practices that can sometimes reinforce inequitable power imbalances, discrimination, and exclusion.

It was heartening to see this event over-subscribed, showing us how important it is for our sector to continue to make spaces for these types of discussions.

A huge thank you to everyone who engaged so actively and openly in this session! by @theequalityinstitute

Last week, Equality Institute and @theasiafoundation
in partnership with the Secretariat of State for Equality and Directorate of Statistics were proud to share learnings at the 2026 Sexual Violence Research Initiative Forum in Bangkok from our recent peer-research study on Timorese women with disabilities’ experiences of gender-based violence.

The Asia Foundation’s Nabilan Program Research Coordinator, Ivonia Pinto Tsia, and peer-researcher, Jacinta Ana Paula da Costa Freitas from the Timor-Leste Disability Association (ADTL), presented on the reasonable accommodations the team made to the interview tool, training, and methodology to ensure that women with all forms of disability could participate fully in all stages of this study – as advisers, researchers, and respondents.

Peer-researcher, Kezia De Jesus Santos Ximenes and Dionisia Paula de Deus, of the Timor-Leste deaf Association (KDTTL) presented a poster on the findings of this groundbreaking research, including that women with disabilities in Timor-Leste experience multiple forms of gender-based violence, often perpetrated by family members, significantly impacting survivors’ mental, physical, reproductive, and financial wellbeing.

This important work was funded by the Australian Government. @ausgov

Congratulations to our colleagues for sharing these learnings at the @thesvri

EQI is honoured to be part of this research. by @theequalityinstitute

As one of only a small handful of practitioners working specifically in primary violence prevention with trans and gender diverse communities in Australia, Starlady has at times felt like an outsider in the sector, noting, 'It’s been incredibly challenging trying to forge a path of trans inclusion, demand accountability and at the same time be open, friendly and approachable. There are still very few opportunities for trans and gender diverse organisations or people to work in primary prevention despite the disproportionate levels of gender-based violence impacting our community.'

The CEO of the Zoe Belle Gender Collective (@zoebellegendercollective) and Campaign Director of Transfemme has now worked for over two decades on improving healthcare access for trans and gender-diverse people, challenging transmisogyny, and addressing the intersecting forms of discrimination and violence experienced by trans women and transfeminine people.

On Folding Chair, Starlady shares how the increasing political and cultural backlash against trans communities in Australia and internationally means for primary prevention – and that, while the work can be challenging and hard to carry at times, there’s also strength to be drawn from the responsibility of creating a healthier, more respectful society.

"I think we need to understand that there’s invaluable knowledge and networks held within communities, especially communities who experience oppression. We are experts in resistance."

CEO of the @zoebellegendercollective, Starlady, joins us for Prevention is Possible – our interview series exploring how the gender-based violence prevention movement has evolved, and what still needs to change to create a future free from violence.

For more than two decades, Starlady has worked alongside trans and gender-diverse communities, combining advocacy, community development, education and creative practice to challenge discrimination and create safer, more inclusive communities.

Her work focuses on improving healthcare access for trans and gender-diverse people, challenging transmisogyny, and addressing the intersecting forms of discrimination and violence experienced by trans women and transfeminine people.

Starlady also leads Transfemme, a violence prevention initiative developed by and for trans women and transfeminine people. The project works to strengthen healthy relationships, prevent violence and build greater understanding of the specific forms of gendered violence experienced by transfeminine communities.

Sharing her insights on the landscape of trans-inclusive primary prevention, what we can do to challenge violence against trans women, and what the broader prevention sector can learn from trans and gender-diverse communities creation of systems of care, safety and support – Starlady's interview is a must read.

Next week, a cohort from the EQI team will head to Bangkok, Thailand for the SVRI Forum (@thesvri) – the world’s leading conference on research, evidence, and solutions to prevent and respond to gender-based violence.

Bringing together over 1,500 global stakeholders, researchers, practitioners, survivors, policymakers, funders, and activists to challenge the status quo, and co-create solutions for a world free from violence, it’s a rare opportunity for those in the violence prevention sector to connect and share knowledge.

With our projects featuring across several presentations and workshops throughout the conference, and our team at the EQI booth in the Exhibition Hub handing out some very cool magnets, we'll be easy to find.

Education can be a powerful force for social and economic change. It gives us the knowledge and skills we need to build better lives, challenge inequality and create stronger communities.

In a time of fake news and rampant misinformation, the role of the teacher matters more than ever. But what happens to this vital work when sexism, misogyny, sexual harassment and violence are treated as just another part of the job?

The recent report "Duty of Care: Teachers’ experiences of sexism, misogyny and sexual harassment in Australian schools", highlights how these experiences are affecting teachers and contributing to the pressures facing Australia’s education workforce.

Here, we pull together some of the key findings and recommendations from the report, including what needs to change in order for education to become a space of safety and equality in our communities.

If the land is a sentient being, if it shares even a fraction of what we recognise in ourselves as capacity for experience, for registering trauma and abuse, then what are the implications of centuries of extraction and violence enacted upon it?

This is the question at the centre of Mulanga Mbedzi's (@the_art_activist) long-form essay, The Land Remembers: On Trauma, Sentience, and the Limits of Our Solutions, where the writer, researcher, and multidisciplinary artist, unpicks modernity's reliance on extraction and accumulation, and the ways our modern understanding of the land is only just begninnig to catch up to the long-held wisdom of traditional ecological knowledge systems.

In The Land Remembers: On Trauma, Sentience, and the Limits of Our Solutions, researcher, writer, and multidisciplinary artist, Mulanga Mbedzi (@the_art_activist) writes about land as a living presence that carries memory, history, and the traces of violence and transformation – as a being. A subject, rather than an object.

Traversing traditional ecological knowledge systems of Indigenous peoples from across the world, Mulanga draws attention to the ways this knowledge – generated through years of sustained, reciprocal relationship with a place, rather than the extractive practices we’ve seen with the advent of modernity – frames the land as something with which we are in relationship, rather than something we simply stand upon and take from.

Pointing out that, increasingly, science does not so much discover new knowledge about the natural world as it catches up to what these traditions already knew, she cautions that powerful institutions should resist epistemic arrogance. And warns that, in conditions of increasing ecological uncertainty, we cannot afford to decide in advance which systems of knowledge are worthy of attention and which are not.

Intersectionality gets talked about a lot. And – thanks to the countermovement of conservative and far right thinking – there’s, once again, a lot of misconceptions about it circulating, which can make it hard to figure out what the term actually means, and why we should actually care.

Well, we can tell you that it’s not about creating a hierarchy of oppression. It’s not about putting people into boxes. And it’s not about making one identity more important than another.

Intersectionality helps us understand how different parts of our identity can overlap to shape our experiences of power, privilege and inequality.

Swipe through as we begin to unpack some of the most common myths about intersectionality. You can read the full research paper, Intersectionality In Action, on our website and dive deeper into what the term really means, where the concept comes from, and why it matters. by @theequalityinstitute

Silenced (@silenced_film) is the essential new documentary exploring the realities of gender-based violence and silencing of survivors through the weaponisation of defamation laws by alleged perpetrators. Sharing the perspectives of women and journalists at the centre of high-profile legal battles across the globe, the film follows international human rights lawyer Jennifer Robinson's exploration of how the legal system is used to intimidate, discredit and ruin survivors, and the journalists who report their stories.

We had the privilege to chat with the producer of Silenced, Blayke Hoffman (@blayke_hoffman), about the making of this powerful and timely documentary — which opens in cinemas nationally from Thursday 3 September.
