“Waterbound” By Dirk Powell

I went out late one night
The moon and the stars were shining bright
Storm come up and the trees come down
Tell you boys I was waterbound

Waterbound on a stranger’s shore
River, rising to my door
Carried my home to the field below
I was waterbound, nowhere to go

Carved my name on an old barn wall
No one to know I was there at all
Stable’s dry on a winter night
You turn your head, you can see the light

Black cat crawling on an old boxcar
It’s a rusty door and a falling star
Ain’t got a dime in my nation’s sack
I’m waterbound and I can’t get back

It’s all gone and it won’t be back
Don’t believe me, count my tracks
The river’s long and the river’s wide
I’ll meet you boys on the other side

So say my name and don’t forget
The water still ain’t got me yet
Nothing but I’m bound to roam
Waterbound and I can’t get home

The Fretless kicked off our 7th Annual #RockportCelticFestival in a groove-heavy, toe-tapping, head-bobbing fashion last night 🎻 So much more music tonight through Sunday as the Festival continues!

Three concerts, two cities, and one mummified toe: Edmonton Opera goes North!

Feeling so grateful to @yukonarts @dawsoncitymusicfest and @edmontonopera for having me along for this adventure! We presented three opera concerts to the warmest audiences imaginable, including one at Dawson City’s old opera house- the first time opera’s been performed there in 100 years.

I really fell in love with the landscape and the community, and hope to return someday- not least to further develop “Klondike Carmen”. 🌹

And yes, I did the sourtoe cocktail. Everyone can get off my case. 🦶

2026 Brewster Ridge Open - 4th MP40

Smuggler’s Notch is one of my favorite places to play, and I look forward to BRO every year to catch up with family and friends. Smugg’s can be as frustrating as it is beautiful though, and this year I hit trees, found the OB, and couldn’t find my putting stroke on the way to a 4th place finish.

I did get to watch my good friend Justin Chiu pick up his first BRO title! I also spent a lot of time with everyone from Mass and Vermont and convinced Ryan and Brittany to come up and compete! Overall a success even if I let my putter hit the ground a few too many times.

Thank you to my sponsors! You can support me by supporting them!

Congratulations to @thefretless for winning Instrumental Album of the Year for their beautiful album, Glasswing, at this past weekend’s @canadianfolkmusicawards . Additional congratulations to one of their fine band mates, Ben Plotnick / @benplotnickmusic for also winning Producer of the Year for his outstanding work with @loudinthepines on their lovely album, Every Colour Left!

I had the pleasure of seeing and photographing The Fretless when they played at @meafordhall last fall! It was a really wonderful evening and I was happy to have that opportunity, and to pick up a signed copy of Glasswing in the process! I’ve discovered more amazing, mostly Canadian, artists in the last year and couldn’t be happier about that. I encourage you to go down the rabbit hole and explore the other intriguing projects these excellent composers and songwriters have to offer!
