I should’ve told this girl this is NOT a humble video 🤧 She’s a straight A student, earned a FULL TUITION scholarship for her master’s program, and co-founded a student organization to support Black genetic counseling students.

I barely scratched the surface with my girl, but she shared her full path to her genetic counseling career. Tap the link in my bio to watch the full video! 🔗

Welcome to our new series ✨ Meet a GC with Lea ✨

Each month we'll be speaking with genetic counsellors (in the UK and beyond) about their journey into and experiences working as a genetic counsellor.

First up we have Timbria Burke, a certified oncology GC working in Dallas, Texas. Timbria is the founder of @thegctea_ where she has documented her journey as a student GC and now a certified genetic counselor. Timbria is passionate about diverse representation in genetic counselling and co-founded the Black Genetic Counseling Student Association (BGCSA), to support Black GC students and recent Black GC graduates!

We really enjoyed speaking with Timbria and hearing of her experiences as a GC in the US!

Interview season is here! As current students, we all know how stressful this part of the cycle can be (we’ve been there!). But good news: you’re not alone!

We asked our fellow genetic counseling students from different programs to share their hottest tips for crushing your GC interview. From must-know prep strategies to the confidence-boosting secrets, they’re spilling it all!

Save this reel for later, and tag a friend who’s applying this cycle! What’s your biggest interview concern? Drop it in the comments! ⬇️ #GeneticCounseling #GCInterviews #FutureGC

It’s officially been one year since I started A Girl and Her Genes Instagram account! Swipe to see some highlights from the first year!

Thank you to everyone who has engaged with the account. I was nervous about creating this account and putting myself out there, but over the last year, I have loved exploring ways to create content related to genetic counseling. I hope you continue engaging with this account as I enter my last semester of graduate school and begin my career as a genetic counselor! 🧬🫶

Comment below what content you want to see in the upcoming year!

We’re thrilled to celebrate the incredible NSGC Perspective and The DNA Exchange articles published by genetic counseling students from schools in Boston! These thoughtful pieces provide valuable insights into our field and beautifully highlight the unique voices of our future colleagues. 🧬✨

A special shoutout to our amazing co-facilitator, Lupita, for her inspiring contribution—don’t miss her article! 💛

We couldn’t be prouder of you all! 💖😊

NSGC in a nutshell! I felt so encouraged and lucky this week as I attended the 43rd annual conference. Being surrounded by people who are passionate about the same things I am, meeting so many amazing people, growing closer to my cohort, and learning so much new information was an incredible and humbling experience. I felt challenged to think about my personal identity as a future genetic counselor, including how I want to leave my mark on this field. I am so thankful for this week and I know I will carry the memories with me for the rest of my life!

✨ BGCSA’s first-ever in-person meet-up at #NSGC2024! Huge thanks to Sucré on Royal St and New Orleans for hosting us. It seems only fitting that our first meet-up took place in a city filled with so much Black culture.

So many showed up, but we’re still missing so many faces. Until we can see each other in person again, we’ll continue to connect over Zoom! 💻

Thank you to Timbria, Charmaine, Zoe, our BGCSA members, and all the Black GCs who came. I really want to list all the names of the incredible people who showed, but there’s too many! Definitely a major highlight of my NSGC.

🥂Here’s to building community together!
