I am in awe of the opportunities that I am given and it was a honor to give this talk during Black History Month and give a brief overview of its origins as well! 🖤❤️💚💛

Welcome to our new series ✨ Meet a GC with Lea ✨

Each month we'll be speaking with genetic counsellors (in the UK and beyond) about their journey into and experiences working as a genetic counsellor.

First up we have Timbria Burke, a certified oncology GC working in Dallas, Texas. Timbria is the founder of @thegctea_ where she has documented her journey as a student GC and now a certified genetic counselor. Timbria is passionate about diverse representation in genetic counselling and co-founded the Black Genetic Counseling Student Association (BGCSA), to support Black GC students and recent Black GC graduates!

We really enjoyed speaking with Timbria and hearing of her experiences as a GC in the US!

What a year 2025 has been! Here’s some highlights from Seattle, work selfies, and other fun moments!

In the last four months of this year, I:

✨ Presented my capstone project at NSGC in Seattle as a platform presenter 🗣️ and got to explore the Black American Music Exhibit at the Museum of Pop! Along with seeing many new and familiar faces :)

✨ Started my first big girl job (aka my dream job) & Counseled over 140 diverse patients across multiple cancer genetics clinics 🙂‍↕️

✨ Gained confidence in my skills as a GC and slowly but surely stopped having imposter syndrome by making mistakes, asking many questions, trusting that I add value to this profession and my patients’ journeys, and giving myself a ton of grace ◡̈

✨ Had my NSGC Perspectives 2024 Article selected to be apart of the Annual Mosaic Collection! This article has reached so many corners of our profession and I am forever grateful for the impact it continues to have in individuals and classrooms where it is selected as a required reading! 🥹

✨ Transitioned over to the Black GC Connect Group as a recent grad 🤧, while still overseeing @blackgcsa_ along with Ash and Charmaine and helping our current co-facilitators along the way!

✨ Reached nearly 950 followers on this page!

✨ and went on new adventures, established community in a new state, intentionally cared for my mental and spiritual health, prioritized family and friends, drank a lot of matcha, and many other things that I’m totally forgetting right now 😂

I can’t wait to see what 2026 has in store for me, this community, and the GC profession!

With NSGC being just a few days away, I wanted to share some tips that worked for me during my first time attending as a student last year!!

The gist for surviving NSGC as a first attendee student is to try new things AND know when/how to recharge!

I’m excited to see what’s in store this year and I hope all new attendees have a great time!

A short but victorious story 🥹. Ya girl is CERTIFIED 🥳

God is so good because this summer quite frankly dragged me by my edges. From moving/driving across the country, starting my career, getting terribly sick the week before my first day of work 🤠, and more! But, we survived and made it through!!

Shout out to @goldendna2 for gifting c/o 2025 a copy of the green book when we matched 2 years ago!! And a huge shout out to my many friends who gifted me so much GC swag and the GC genius study guide! All of it came in handy for studying and the encouragement and support helped me so much!

I’m very big on celebrating both small and big wins, so of course this weekend had to be full of fun!! 🥰 I’m so proud of myself for locking in and pushing to the finish line (despite procrastinating per usual for many weeks 🤓)!

This exam was a beast and studying for it while life still happens was grueling. To those who did not pass this cycle, I’m sending much love and virtual hugs 🫂. I have many qualms with standardized testing for various reasons, but the conclusion is that this exam doesn’t define you or measure the great GC you already are and will continue to grow into! I hope all August 2025 exam takers took time celebrating their hard work, regardless of the outcome! 🤎

I am overjoyed and humbled to announce that my abstract, “Exploring the impact of intersectionality on the success of mentorship for Black genetic counseling students” was selected for a platform presentation at the 2025 annual NSGC conference!

This work was a true labor of love as I’m extremely passionate about mentorship and believe it has a strong influence on professional and personal development, especially in minority communities such as my own.

I am honored to be able to share my participants’ stories with the greater genetic counseling community in just a few months! 🤎

Thank you to the abstract review committee for choosing to highlight this needed work! And thank you to my capstone committee for championing this project!

The BGCSA community is excited to welcome the incoming class of 2027! Huge congratulations on this big accomplishment!!
