POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

We are thankful to the Greater Hudson Heritage Network for awarding The National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame a Preservation Supplies Grant which allowed us to purchase the necessary supplies to properly store items in our collection like Hall of Fame trainer Woody Stephens’ hat, an audio recording of Secretariat’s historic Belmont Stakes win, crops like the one pictured which was used by Hall of Fame jockey Don Pierce, and so much more!

The Preservation Supplies Grant is made possible with public funds from the New York State Council of the Arts, with support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature, and additional support from the Coby Foundation, which provides dedicated funding for textile-related projects.

What does it take to preserve a work of art for generations to come? 🎨

From Decay to Display: Conserved Works from the Collection pulls back the curtain on the art and science of conservation, bringing together works from the CAM Collection that have undergone professional treatment—and sharing the stories of the care, expertise, and collaboration that helped preserve them.

Among the works on view are seven paintings conserved with support from the NYSCA/GHHN Conservation Treatment Grant Program: Jean Charlot’s La Tormenta, Albert Pinkham Ryder’s Moonlit Coastal Scene, Niagara Falls [from the Canadian side] (artist unknown, possibly Robert Reginald Whale), Ferdinand Richardt’s Niagara University, George Luks’ Portrait of a Girl with a Doll, Elmer Ellsworth Garnsey’s Sunset Yellowstone Canyon, and George Inness Jr.’s The Sunburst.

See these works—and the remarkable results of conservation—up close tomorrow night! ✨

Join us Thursday, October 8, for CAM’s Fall Opening Reception, celebrating From Decay to Display alongside Sasha Stiles: STANZA and finding rest by Joel Mulindwa.

💜 CAM Members Preview: 4:30–5 p.m.
🥂 Public Reception: 5–7 p.m.
🎟️ Free & open to the public

A well-deserved recognition for our Senior Curator, Emily O’Leary! 👏

Emily and the Derfner Judaica Museum + Art Collection, located on our campus, received a Greater Hudson Heritage Network Award for Excellence for their work preserving and sharing the legacy of Stuart Edelson, a New York based LGBTQ artist.

Through original research, an exhibition, and a digital guide, Emily brought new attention to Edelson’s life and work, including his bronze sculpture, “Memory Object” which is now on view at the museum on our campus!

The Museum would like to welcome the newly conserved oil painting of 𝘐𝘴𝘢𝘣𝘦𝘭 𝘋𝘰𝘥𝘨𝘦 𝘚𝘭𝘰𝘢𝘯𝘦 by Constantaine Alajalov, on display in the Museum's 20th Century Gallery.

The conservation of Isabel Dodge Sloane was supported through the NYSCA/GHHN Conservation Treatment Grant administered by the Greater Hudson Heritage Network. This program is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.

Isabel Cleves Dodge Sloane (1897-1962) was born in Detroit and was the second of John F. Dodge’s three children. Her father was co-founder of Dodge Brothers Motor Company. In 1921, she married New York stockbroker George Sloane. In 1924, Dodge Sloane got her start in racing with steeplechasers under the name Brookmeade Stable. Dodge Sloane twice won the American Grand National with the gelding His Boots, but her stable’s greatest success came on the flats. Dodge Sloane’s first stakes winner in flat racing was Brooms, winner of the 1926 Hopeful. She purchased 850 acres for Brookmeade Farm in Upperville, Va., and entered the breeding side of the business. Brookmeade bred 74 stakes winners, including the champions Sword Dancer and Bowl of Flowers, both Hall of Fame members. In 1933, Brookmeade’s Inlander won the Travers and Arlington Classic to help the stable place third on the national leading owners’ list. Dodge Sloane became the first woman to be the leading owner in America when Brookmeade topped the earnings list in 1934. That year, Dodge Sloane won the Kentucky Derby with future Hall of Famer Cavalcade and the Preakness with High Quest. Cavalcade also won the American Derby and Arlington Classic that year. Brookmeade was again atop the owners’ list in 1950. Dodge Sloane won the third leg of the Triple Crown with Sword Dancer in 1959. Dodge Sloane was the Thoroughbred Club of America’s Honored Guest in 1951.

Objects come in and out of our lives, but Lyndhurst has been fortunate to retain more than 10,000 pieces in our museum collection.

However, over time, some have vanished.

Over the past decade, our curators have worked diligently to repatriate missing objects, while also benefitting from generous donations and strategic acquisitions. We’ve even found supposedly missing pieces in our own storage areas.

This exhibition highlights the many generous gifts and “finds” made over the last decade and shares their stories with our visitors.

Proud of the work by our Senior Paintings Conservator @chiarakuhns.

A couple weeks ago, Priscilla Brendler from the Greater Hudson Heritage Network swung by to pick up Elizabeth Dyckman's portrait, freshly treated and ready to head back home to the @dyckmanfarmhouse. Chiara spent a lot of care on this centuries-old piece, and it shows.

This was all part of a Save America's Treasures conservation project, made possible in part by @us_imls the Museum and Library Services.

On June 19th the Finger Lakes Wine Museum at Bully Hill Vineyards will be hosting an event to honor Raymond Fedderman, New York State's first African American winemaker. Fedderman was a farmer, community leader and small business entrepreneur in Prattsburgh, New York. In the early 1970s Fedderman started New York State's first African American owned winery, the Fedderman Wine Company. The company released only one vintage in 1973 before financial difficulties forced its closure.

The Finger Lakes Wine Museum houses the largest collection of vintage wine bottles in the Northeast. In its archives, there were a number of Fedderman Wine Co. bottles that were in need of formal conservation. The bottles from 1973 are extremely rare and represent an important piece of local, regional and national history. In 2024, the Greater Hudson Heritage Network was awarded a Save America's Treasures grant to conserve 35 objects in 10 museums across New York State. Part of the grant supported the conservation treatment of 5 Fedderman wine bottles and their labels.

On June 19th Conservator Kate Wight Tyler and Executive Director of the Greater Hudson Heritage Network Priscilla Brendler will deliver the bottles back to the museum where they will be permanently displayed. A lecture discussing the conservators work and the bottles historical significance will be provided. A light reception will follow with refreshments and hors d’oeuvres, with music provided by Son Sur Son.

Lecture: 2 - 3pm
Reception: 3 - 4:30pm

The conservation of the Finger Lakes Wine Museum’s Fedderman Wine Bottles and Labels is a part of a Save America’s Treasures conservation project managed by the Greater Hudson Heritage Network (GHHN), made possible in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Conservation work was done by Kate Wight Tyler.

Get a behind-the-scenes look at history being saved!

Come see Geneva in action this Saturday during public tours at 10:30 & 12.

Paper conservator @geneva_ikle is currently onsite at the @drydentownhistoricalsociety working her magic on this gorgeous historic wallpaper. Surface cleaning is done — now comes the meticulous work of inpainting, filling and toning losses, and reattaching lifting sections to the wall.

We’re so grateful to @theghhn whose conservation grant made this project possible. Follow along as the transformation continues!

We’re still feeling inspired after an incredible weekend in Albany!

Our Executive Director had the honor of presenting at the Museum Association of New York conference alongside Boscobel House & Gardens and our wonderful partners at the Morris-Jumel Mansion.

The session, “Preservation as Program: Restoring Trust and Transparency at NY Historic Sites,” explored the drama, challenges, and excitement behind restoration projects and how we bring the public along for the journey. Grateful for such thoughtful colleagues and conversations that push this work forward.
