While aristocrats were picking polite harp solos in the Assembly Rooms, the raw Bath was gathered in taverns getting rowdy to fiddle music and drinking West Country cider. 🎻🍺

With the Bath Folk Festival kicking off this week, it’s easy to forget that 18th-century Bath existed in two completely different musical worlds.

Jane Austen’s polite society glazed over to classical pianoforte while nibbling cucumber sandwiches.

The market traders, bakers, and cider-makers were jammed into underground taverns dancing to folk tunes with flagons of scrumpy (West Country unfiltered cider) readily sloshed upon the flagstones.

Folk music kept the working-class heart of Bath beating while the lords and ladies paraded down Milsom Street.

Catch some folk gigs this week in one of the atmospheric venues citywide. Check out the line-up here: https://bathfolkfestival.org/

Once you've worked up an appetite jigging, book a spot on one of our Jane Austen's Cheese Toastie food tour (link in the bio) for some delicious eats with paired local cider. 🎻🍺

October's book club pick, "The Family" by Sara Mesa, translated from Spanish 🇪🇸

'There are no secrets in this family!’ proclaims Damián, the father, triumphantly. A secular idealist obsessed with morality and order, he is blind to the cracks in his home’s foundations, the oppression that pervades it, and the elaborate fictions his wife and four children devise to survive it. While he quotes Gandhi and expounds on the virtues of education, charity and thrift, the children retreat into humiliated compliance or seek freedom in the most dangerous of places 📖

We're so excited because our very own Laura will be interviewing internationally celebrated Sara Mesa at @mrbsemporium on 16th October. Tickets are still available! 🎟️

We'll be meeting at 7pm on 21st October @thelivingroomatthegrapes. We'd love to see you! 📚

On our way back from Bristol with a bag of records and fresh cartridges because tomorrow The Grapes Record Box goes live.

Way back when, before we took this place over, we were planning vinyl nights as a key part of the weekend. Opening a pub in 2019 turned out to be a bit of a bummer and, when the world opened up again and let us do our thing, celebration seemed to be the order of the day and DJs became part of our weekends.

A recent, rather hectic trip to Germany for Volksfest and meeting up with some other amazing operators put us back in touch with that original thinking. And here I am with a bag of records because, while uploading our collection onto Discogs, I realised it’s 32 years since Massive Attack released Protection. So it seemed only right that our first themed Record Box should be Bristol Sounds.

And the Record Box? Unless we have a band, it’ll be running every Friday and Saturday from 6pm, with 12 whole albums chosen to take us through the night. Not a playlist, not someone skipping between tracks — the record goes on, side A then side B. And it will absolutely not be a live jukebox, so please don’t ask the team for requests.
Crucially, it all plays out at talking volume.

So come on in, get a pint, sit with your mates and have an actual conversation with brilliant music playing around you.

The DJs aren’t going anywhere, obvs. We love them and they’ll still play monthly specials, parties and events — we just want those nights to feel properly special when they happen.

And tomorrow night? If we run out of albums before we run out of night, we’re finishing with Stanton Warriors….i couldn’t find one of theirs today, though it is on order.

Into October and what a feast of musical delights this weekend! Loads to choose from and probably - if you're like me some hard choices to make. Check out all the details and those for the rest of the month in the October Issue of Mikiie's Gig Guide. Promo music 'Drag Me Down' from @mute_tv_ who play Widcombe Social Club on Saturday. See you at a gig. 😊
