"In the film you're going to see people from across the political divide, from all walks of life, but who all have a similar story: that when [the LNG] industry wants to come into your community, they make a lot of promises, and what these people found was that these promises were not fulfilled." - director Katie Camosy on her film GASLIT, being screened for free tomorrow at the Honolulu Museum of Art and on Saturday at Patagonia Haleʻiwa. ✈️ What is the carbon footprint of deportation?

A new analysis found that U.S. immigration enforcement flights produced an estimated 335,876 metric tons of CO₂ emissions in 2025—an 88% increase from the previous year. As immigration enforcement expands, so does a question rarely discussed in public debates:

What is the environmental cost of mass deportation?

Climate change is already driving displacement around the world. Yet the systems built to respond to migration may themselves be contributing to the emissions that fuel future migration.

This isn’t simply an immigration story.

It’s a climate story.
A public policy story.
And a question of accountability.

What would change if we measured immigration enforcement not only by arrests and deportations, but also by its environmental footprint?

Swipe through and tell us:
Should governments be required to publicly report the carbon emissions generated by immigration enforcement operations?

A quick recap of a wild legislative session. 🏛️ Writing letters, speaking at rallies, and realising that democracy isn’t something that you just watch—it’s something you do. Shoutout to everyone who put in the miles with me this spring. The work doesn’t stop here! 🌊

A Hawaiʻi state judge has rejected four different arguments from fossil fuel companies to have Honolulu’s climate deception case dropped, sending the case forward toward discovery. 🙌

Honolulu sued ExxonMobil, Sunoco, Shell, and other oil companies in 2020 to make them pay for the climate damages the companies knowingly fueled for decades.

In one filing, Naomi Oreskes — a Harvard Professor of the History of Science whose research includes the history of climate change disinformation — highlights the “vast discrepancies” in the oil and gas companies’ internal and external communication, including deceptive efforts that are “ongoing today.”

“The fossil fuel industry went to extensive lengths to deny the reality of climate change or publicly emphasize the “uncertainties” about climate change, as opposed to what the industry knew to be true,” Oreskes wrote.

🌎 Equip our keiki for the climate challenges ahead. #HB99

Climate change isn’t abstract — it’s reshaping our islands’ economy, health, and communities. That’s why I’m proud to introduce House Bill 99, which would require the DOE to establish a Climate Literacy Certificate Program in Hawai‘i public high schools. Under this bill, students would complete two climate-focused courses and a hands-on project, earning a certificate that signals real understanding of climate science, impacts, and solutions.

This isn’t just education; it’s leadership development — preparing students to navigate rising seas, protect ʻāina, and build resilient economies. Other states are moving in this direction; HB 99 brings that momentum home. Check out this story at Hawaii Public Radio.

The next legislative session starts Jan 21 — follow along and join the conversation. 🌱📘

Last month, HCIR was honored to join our national partner @npnewamericans in Chicago for a powerful convening of the Climate Displaced Leadership Program. 🌎✨

We gathered with leaders, advocates, and organizations from across the country to talk story about climate justice, share community experiences, and learn from those already navigating climate-driven displacement.

The voices of climate-displaced immigrants and refugees continue to ground this work, reminding us that frontline communities are also frontline leaders.

For Hawai‘i and the Pacific, this work couldn’t be more urgent. 🌺🌊

HCIR is committed to helping shape the national conversation while uplifting the lived experiences of communities here at home. As climate change accelerates migration across the Pacific, we see our role as both bridge-builder and advocate in ensuring our islands are heard, represented, and supported.

Mahalo to NPNA for hosting and sponsoring this convening and for continuing to create space for frontline leadership and storytelling.

🎙️ And stay tuned… HCIR is launching a new podcast episode inspired by this convening and the powerful conversations that emerged.

Navahine Case Update

Years ago, a group of young Hawaiʻi residents took a stand for their future, filing the Navahine case against the state for failing to protect their constitutional right to a clean and healthy environment.

Now, major progress is happening! HDOT is rolling out the statewide transportation plan to cut emissions across roads, sea, and inter-island air travel. EV chargers, better bike & walking paths, and public transit improvements are already underway. The youth advisory council has been actively shaping priorities, and public input has made a real impact.

Key dates:
🗓 Draft plan – April 2025
🗓 Full plan – October 2025
🗓 Full implementation – December 2025

Your voice matters! Stay informed, share updates, and speak up on transportation and climate projects in your community. Together, we’re shaping a cleaner, greener Hawaiʻi. 💚🌊

In advance of this year’s UN Climate Talks, our national partner @npnewamericans has launched another powerful installment of the Climate Displaced Leaders Series. 🌍

This project uplifts the perspectives of immigrants and refugees whose lives and homelands have been reshaped by the climate crisis.

Each story is a reminder that those most impacted are not only witnesses, they are leaders charting the path toward resilient, sustainable futures.

From Hawai‘i, HCIR stands in solidarity with climate-displaced communities across the Pacific and beyond.

We are committed to supporting NPNA in elevating these voices and ensuring they are heard on the global stage.
