5 hikes in Kentucky’s Red River Gorge, ranked easiest to hardest, with everything you need to know before you go.

1️⃣ Sky Bridge Loop 0.8 mi loop · Easy · 30 min Partly paved. You walk across the top of the arch, then loop down underneath it. It’s the busiest trail in the Gorge, so go early. There are sheer drop-offs on both sides, so keep kids close.

2️⃣ Rock Bridge + Creation Falls 1.4 mi loop · Easy · 45 min You get a waterfall plus the only arch in the area with water running beneath it. It’s shaded and family-friendly, and the best pick on a hot day.

3️⃣ Natural Bridge (Original Trail up, Laurel Ridge down) ~2 mi loop · Moderate · 1–1.5 hrs Kentucky’s most famous arch, 78 ft long and 65 ft high. It’s a steep climb with lots of stairs, and you squeeze through a narrow rock passage to get on top. You can take the skylift if you’d rather ride up. It’s inside Natural Bridge State Resort Park.

4️⃣ Gray’s Arch 2.4 mi out-and-back · Moderate · 1.5 hrs One of the biggest arches in the Gorge. The walk in is easy until the end, where steep stairs and a little rock scrambling take you down to the base. Start at Gray’s Arch Picnic Area.

5️⃣ Auxier Ridge + Courthouse Rock 5 mi loop · Moderate–Hard · 2.5–3 hrs These are the best views in the Gorge. The ridgeline is exposed, with drop-offs, very little shade, and steep stairs. Go for sunset and bring more water than you think you need. The trailhead is at the end of Tunnel Ridge Rd, which is gravel.

Know before you go: 📵 Cell service is spotty. Download offline maps before you lose signal. 🍂 Fall color usually peaks mid-to-late October. 🐕 Leashed dogs are welcome. 🥾 Wear real shoes. The sandstone gets slick after rain.

Would you sleep inside a cave in Red River Gorge, Kentucky?

Soon, you can.

Cavara is a micro resort being built into the sandstone of the Red River Gorge, with cave suites and treehouses designed to put you inside the landscape instead of next to it.

What we’re building: • 11.5 acres in the Red River Gorge • 3 private cave suites, each sleeping up to 4 • 3 treehouses, each sleeping 2 • 2,000 feet of string to map out the entire property • 150+ hours spent on designing and engineering the treehouses alone

Every cave suite gets a lofted bed, a fireplace, and floor-to-ceiling windows facing the forest. All three sit in the same sandstone formation, and each one is fully private.

We even plan to provide guests with golf carts to get around the property.
