I smiled more while racing The @midsouthgravel double more than I think I’ve ever smiled during a race. At one point, a person in our group made a comment to @maude.tmg and I in disbelief that we could be riding so hard while chatting so much. My response was that our race program was a little different this weekend.

Running my first ultra, I didn’t know how my legs would hold up, or if I’d even enjoy it. But the five hours flew by as I chased fast friends, ran with others, and cheered on everyone I passed or who caught me. My toes, were in a world of pain that I’ve never experienced before which meant the last 10 miles were excruciating. But I was reminded by a kid at mile 29 that if you believe in yourself, you can accomplish anything. And that put a huge smile on my face and pushed me to the finish line in 4 hours and 58 minutes.

I have never felt a runner’s high like I did that day. I smiled and laughed, and it propelled me to Saturday morning’s start line. I jammed my pockets with food and told myself to just go ride my bike. No expectations, no goals, just ride. As the dust settled and people found their groove, I found myself surrounded by friends! It was fun to ride with a different group than normal. I took comfort in familiar wheels and was thankful to have @alvinescajeda in my group. I followed Maude up the punchy climbs and led her through the techy sections. I found @always.li.king and @rachelmcb and had a front seat view of their race for first.

As the miles went on, I smiled more and more. We crossed paths with the 50 mile course, and I was inspired to watch so many people tackle the Oklahoma red dirt. I whooped and laughed through then single track and harnessed my inner cyclocross racer in the sand pits.

I crossed the line elated and exhausted. Proud of all my friends for giving their all and grateful for the opportunity to be part of this wonderful event!

It started fast and fun but over in the blink of an eye. Torn sidewall at mile 4 makes for a very short day. #fuckinghell
